Ed psych - general question

I just generally don't know the system and how it works and would love some colour around this.

DD will hopefully have adhd assessment before 2022 is out according to current position on wait list (15 mths in for wait).

But when would it be appropriate to have a more general assessment with an Ed psychiatrist? And if required is it a similar wait if we wanted to go via the NHS?

Thanks!

To add colour to my situation - DD is 9, in year 5. I recognised probable adhd when younger but I think there is secondary depression alongside anxiety over more recent months and don't know if the adhd assessment scheduled will be sufficient.

So the Ed psych is doing the ADHD assessment in your area?
So that's a psychologist.
They won't be able to offer medication management of your daughter is diagnosed with ADHD.
They may offer other management strategies including parent training and school accommodation.
If you want medication for adhd you go to the child psychiatrist who is a doctor.
Neither will offer separate assessment or treatment for "anxiety" or " depression" in this age as any emotional symptoms will be seen as consequences of the ADHD. And the treatment for emotional symptoms in this age is the same- parent training and school accommodations.

Unless part of a wider assessment e.g. as part of the MDT assessing for ASD Educational Psychologist assessments aren’t generally done via the NHS. They are generally do via education. Schools have limited EP hours, so unless difficulties are severe they are unlikely to use their hours on DD. If you feel an EHCP may be needed you can apply for an EHCP and if the LA agree to assess an EP assessment will be part of that.

You can also go private, but independent EPs have long waits at the moment too.

Or do you mean a psychiatrist? That would be via CAMHS or privately.

Thanks for the replies.

@WindowsSmindows
No, it's a psychiatrist not Ed psychologist we await the adhd assessment from via CAMHs. So hopefully this will lead to her being medicated and help with the secondary symptoms.

@Thatsnotmycar thanks for the info re the Ed psychologist- I didn't really know where they fit into the bigger picture, I've now talked to school and they have brought her profile to them to discuss. They told me at school that many of the techniques the Ed pysch would most likely recommend they are already trying to implement from their experience anyway. Ed pysch agreed with Sen approach to keep going with these initiatives this half term along with the awaited therapy that has just commenced and that following this they would review her profile again nearer end of term as to if she should be prioritised to have as assessment with the Ed Psych.

I guess my question was whether I need to get her seen in CAMHs by a psychiatrist separate of Adhd awaited assessment for other issues or if once in the system and off the waitlist the psychiatrist will coordinate if she needs other assessments or help.
