Ready-made formula given cold?

mogwai · 09/06/2005 10:32

Although expensive, this seems pretty convenient for trips out, or to keep at grandparents' house (I worked out from the carton that a newborn costs one pound fifty to run every day, excluding nappies!).

It says on the carton that the milk can be given cold or heated. Does anyone give it to their baby cold? In principle it sounds fine, but I've never heard of babies being given cold milk.

Next thing, I'll be asking if I can just put a straw in the top!!!!

hotmama have you considered weaning her on to room temp over a period of time - ie make it slightly cooler each time until you don't have to heat it up at all - you can get travel heating gadgets but there are so damn slow

I have always given ds milk at both room temperature and warmed and he has never seemed to notice the difference. I also have only used the ready made cartons, I had a very unsuccessful attempt at breastfeeding which resulted in me sending dh out in the middle of the night he came back with the ready made stuff and we just never got round to buying the formula that you make up yourself.

Regretfully, I have always heated formula so dd turns her nose up if it comes straight out of the carton. Has anyone realised the error of their ways and got their dd/ds to start taking formula cold/at room temperature - think I have made a rod for my back!

If dd is desperate am I to assume she will have to drink it cold and therefore get used to it - or have nothing?

Ds has formula anyway it comes, as long as it comes FAST. Mostly room temp - I do the bottle of water and the divided pot thing.

Dd refused all formula, anyway it came... And all EBM... body temp and fresh from the boob was the only way for her!

dd never had heated formula when whe went on it at 7 months I just used to give it to her - either room temperature or from the fridge...

ds had a mix of cold, room temp and warmed...

not warmed is very convenient when out...

Mogwai - ready made formula is given at room temperature in the hospital. There is no need to heat it. In fact , the latest guidance is that babies should be given ready made formula up to the age of 4 weeks to avoid risk of infection from powdered milk as it is not sterile. Will find you a link. Feeds should also be made fresh if possible. There are a number of mums on mumsnet who have bottles with a container for the powder so it is added just prior to feeding.

I stood by the fridge naked specially to cool my breastmilk down.

Sorry

TBH it does dissolve better if you warm it. But the formula I used here dissolved OK in room temp water if I gave it a really GOOD shake.

Yep, we gave DD milk straight from fridge - breastmilk then formula and now cow's milk. Heard that in States that's how they do it so thought it would be much easier. Only problem I had was my mum who was horrified!

For DD1, who was mixed-fed, I did the three-section container plus boiled water too. Never had any problems whatsoever, and mixed it anywhere - once in a bus queue with her in her buggy. Amazingly easy.

Bad mummy Blu used to give DS bottles straight from the fridge. Not when he was tiny - from about 8 months. (wouldn't drink from a bottle before then anyway).

ditto here - room temp but we do heat the night bottle in the microwave - helps her sleep through for some reason!

cartons are a godsend!

Yes, I use/d a microwave when I wanted it warm too. Just make sure you shake it well.

Another one who agrees with the advice here - I have ready made cartons in the cupboard along with some disposible bottles but tbh I find it actually easier to just take the cooled boiled water and the formula in a divided pot thing (as described more eloquently by acnebride !) when I go out. DD takes it at room temp and always has done - she needed formula at the hospital due to being teeny and unable to latch on and they certainly didn't heat it there so she never knew any different which makes life much easier !

Mogwai - Here's another revelation.... I bung the bottle in the microwave for 15 secs then give it a good shake... BINGO! Warm milk!

Once you get the baby used to it cool and warm... then its 6 and half a dozen... my dd just wants MILK any way possible.

Our dd's morning bottle has been on the windowsill overnight and we add formula in the morning. It does still dissolve if you give it a good shake.

Ah! The French and their distaste for kettles!

But they do make nice onion tart....

acnebridge -

Will the formula still dissolve if the water is not very warm?

PS pharmacist in France told me it wasn't dissolving because I wasn't heating it enough. So I did start heating it again - still couldn't get it to work. How are you supposed to do this wihtout kettles anyway??

Report
acnebride · 09/06/2005 10:40

Room temp, always. Sometimes from the fridge - ds seemed completely unbothered but relatives often were.

Cheaper and still pretty convenient are just preparing bottles of boiled water and taking a small three-section round box with measured powder to tip into the water (Toys R Us, Boots and I'm sure others do them).

But i resorted to ready made in France when I just couldn't get the different formula to dissolve properly.
