Should a 3-year-old drink Aptamil 1Yrs+ Growing Up Milk?

Dear all,

My cousin has a three year old child. For some reason, she keeps buying the Aptamil 1Yrs+ Growing Up Milk Powder for her son, saying he likes it.

I had a heated debate with her, but she doesn't listen.

Could you pls advise whether it is a good idea?

My sincere thanks,

the only reason to buy this is it comes in ready made cartons, so you can have said carton by the side of the bed and feed to DC at 5:30am without having to go downstairs and get fresh milk.

I would suggest if she's using the faffy power type, then she's concerned about their diets, is your DN a fussy eater with a vegetable aversion? I know parents who have resorted to fortified milk (which is what it is) out of desparation...

The only reason that stuff exists is so that formula companies can have adverts on TV (because they are not allowed to advertise anything for under 6 months).

But it won't do any harm. It's not like she is feeding him red bull.

Because it's a pernicious product designed to promote formula at the expense of bf-ing, by playing on parents' insecurities & ignorance.

I don't go round dashing beakers from the lips of toddlers, but it is dodgy crap...

My friend gives her 2 year old it because she refuses cows milk. Better than nothing for some toddlers.

Nobody should buy it.

It was invented to circumvent advertising restrictions on formula.

I'd be silently grinding my teeth at the sight of it, but I wouldn't volunteer an opinion unless the parent using it initiated the discussion (at which point I wouldn't hold back...)

Might as well give it to a 3yo as a 1yo. Might as well put it in your own tea, for that matter. It's not what's in it that's the problem with it...

Well, I'm pretty sure it has a load of vitamins in it so probably better drinking that than juice.

I don't see why you would be so against it, it wont be doing any harm other than wasting money.

I agree with seeker, what a blooming waste of money.

It's not going to hurt him. Probably better for him than regular squash?

sorry, cousin.

if she wants to waste her money let her.

If you were saying 'should I give my 3YO growing up milk?' I'd say no.

But your sister isn't asking for your advice, so leave her alone.

Another vote for pointless.

won't it fill him up so he doesn't eat much?

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 22/09/2012 13:50

It's pointless. For a 1 year old or a 3 year old.

Expensive, processed shite. You get 4 pints of real milk for about £1.20. but it's her call, if she wants to waste her money...

Personally, I wouldn't buy it for my 3 year old on the basis it's an utter waste of money.

However, so is hot chocolate, which I do buy - and the aptimal will be better for him than that. I really can't see why it bothers you in the slightest - I'm sure there are things you buy which other people think are pointless.

Thank you.

Agree with seeker. It's a pointlessly expensive way of providing milk to children old enough to no longer require milk modified into baby formula.

Nobody should buy "growing up milk"

It's a ridiculous marketing exercise preying on parental insecurities and should be boycotted.

Report
Trazzletoes · 22/09/2012 12:18

It won't actively harm him, I wouldn't think, but fresh milk is so much cheaper and surely better to get him in the habit of cow's milk?

Report
midori1999 · 22/09/2012 12:17

Well, I wouldn't buy any 1 yrs plus milk, but I can't see it would do any harm, except be a huge waste of money.
