...well is there anything to stop the subtle promotion of formula feeding in other ways - like this for example? The story has nothing to do with feeding babies so why show a picture of a baby with a bottle? On the news this morning there was a story about women who have babies earlier missing out on their careers (different issue...), and on the clip it showed newborn babies in hospital being fed with little cow & gate bottles!

Oh bottlelover's not serious, she's just trolling. She actually said earlier on that she "promotes" bottlefeeding whenever she can. Gee, thanks BL, what a lot of favours you're doing children.

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 17:40

Who is bottlelover anyway?

ButtonMoon · 20/02/2006 17:42

Tell you what, if i see a woman bf in public i want to go up and say "you go girl!!" it takes a lot of guts to do it in certain places and be in a stereotyped minority!!

Racers · 20/02/2006 17:44

Wow Buttonmoon - great minds, eh?! Well done for trying. You never know, they might yet have her breastfeeding, if not make a story out of it as such, which I think would be great and I personally would credit to you

Of course there are many influences on feeding choices, and many deficencies in bf support in this country, but we're just trying to do our little bit in our spare time.

I don't want or expect to see pictures of bottles banned but I am pleased for Tatties that the picture has been changed.

Oh some good posts since I started writing (esp Pruni).

helsi · 20/02/2006 17:44

I am not a breast feeder as I said before but I do think that it would be nice to get the balance right. I would support this issue if I could but from reading your posts its seems that the attitude of the programmes and editirs etc is a fob off attitude. If i can do anything to help level out the balance then just let me know - even though I don't do it myself - but it they are personal issues as to why.

RedZuleika · 20/02/2006 17:53

bottlelover: thanks for patronising me, but I specified that it was a male editor because he refers to the female staffer. It was just for clarity. Got a feminist hang-up, have we?

They may be changing the picture to make me / us happy, but they are changing it. And we are the licence payers.

Do you believe that the actors are doing it for real in sex scenes?? They must be really sore after several takes...

tiktok · 20/02/2006 17:58

Despite what I said before, I am v. pleased Tatties emailed them and they changed the pic!

It's true about a life time of never seeing bf - one pic of bottle feeding won't make a difference, but a zillion images do, coupled with the lack of bf images everywhere. When you do see bf, it's quite often a soft-focus romanticised one, sometimes with a naked mother and naked baby....very unrealistic (I mean, how practical is that!!!???). I wonder if this contributes to the idea that bf women have to 'get their breasts out' or 'strip half-naked' in public??

Bottlelover is a troll, I think.

At least, I can only assume she/he is, as the arguments used are woefully thin.

tiktok · 20/02/2006 17:59

Sorry, Red, it was you wot did the emailing!!

Greensleeves · 20/02/2006 17:59

Perhaps the name doesn't refer to baby bottles at all??

Racers · 20/02/2006 18:00

Indeed RedZ. Also, may influence future editorial decisions. Although they'll probably use the legs again in a story about infant feeding, rather than represent breast or bottle feeding!
Maybe we should send them a pic of a ff and bf'er feeding happily next to each other for their 'library'

tamum · 20/02/2006 18:22

Coming to this very late, but I have to say I assumed from reading the Corrie link that what they meant was that the actress who plays Sarah-Louise is very young too, and it was inappropriate to ask her to pretend to be breastfeeding just because of she might be feeling self-conscious. I could of course be wrong though....

CarolinaMoon · 20/02/2006 18:25

jeez, you just hold the doll as if you're cuddling it. That really is about all there is to acting the part of a bfing mum. The viewers don't need to check if the latch is ok .

Tatties · 20/02/2006 18:30

I did email the BBC yesterday. Have been out for the afternoon, and there was an email when I got back to say they'd changed the pic! But I didn't get as a detailed a response as you Red, I just got "Thank you for your email, the picture has been changed."

I think it's too late to be preaching about breastfeeding at ante-natal classes. Opinions about feeding babies are formed way before that, whether we realise it or not.

And thank you for the positive comments, glad you don't all think I am some nutter who wants to ban bottle feeding.....

I've just seen that ebay uses a baby bottle to depict the section titled "Baby Goods". Anyone want to tackle them?

hunkermunker · 21/02/2006 09:46

Good luck to anyone who can get an email through to eBay.

LucyJu · 21/02/2006 10:42

Well done for getting the BBC to change its website. I know it's just a drop in the ocean, but even so...
Has someone emailed ebay already? I just had a look and they were using a picture of some shoes. (What is it with feet? Not even baby shoes!)

Tatties · 21/02/2006 10:48

Well it wasn't me this time, I feel drained after this thread!

madmarchhare · 21/02/2006 19:01

Although the picture didnt particularly bother me, in fact it didnt at all, I'm pleased to see that the beeb took into concideration the comments that were made.
