Has anyone bought it and can say if it's any good?

I'd recommend sademagazine.co

Brilliant read for young black girls ;)

I didn't pick up on the name at first but dw straight away thought was that it was a bit misogynoir. I raised my eyebrows and she gave me a look that reminded me that she would know better lol. We missed the BBC coverage earlier this year so we watched it together on YT. The creators seem really genuine and positive plus we love that it is a black mother and daughter team behind it. I think the title is on trend with how childrens' magazines can be deliberately cliche/fun/ironic/twee.

The magazine is definitely a great idea, but the name just hit a nerve with me. I was at school with someone who was quite light-skinned and his nickname was 'chocolate drop' so that was what resonated when I first saw it.

However, on another thread on BM I was taken to task for mentioning it as the view is not popular apparently...... Halloween Confused

@Venicelover I’m not keen on the name either. The magazine is a great idea and hope it’s successful but the name doesn’t sit right. Smacks of calling black girls “chocolate”.
@Venicelover I get slur vibes from the title. The words in themselves aren’t offensive it just has the feel of a playground insult. Shouldn’t but does to me anyway.
I agree, but it seems we are in the minority. Perhaps we are being over sensitive?

They're also in the process of publishing Cocoa Boy magazine as well. At least before Covid hit anyway. So if you have sons, be on the look out for that too.

I have subscribed, think it's superb. My daughters are a bit too young for it or any magazine (they can't really read yet) but I think they're great to have around the house.

And what reservations should one be having?

Does no one have reservations about the title or am I missing something?

I have subscribed to this for my god-daughter. She loves it. My DC are too young atm

However, I was disheartened to see all the wilful ignorant comments about the magazine on twitter after it was featured on This Morning, saying how it was racist to white girls and there is no need for it. That the black girls should just be featured in mainstream magazines (that's a unique thought right?) and if black girls have their own magazine then white girls should also have their own (mum isn't that Like every mainstream magazine anyway?)

So I hope more people will support it and subscribe because it's very much needed and lovely to see girls that look like you in print. I wish it had been around when I was younger. I could never relate to any beauty tips and noone looked like me in the magazines I had.

My kids are a bit old for this now, but I think I'll get it for my niece.

I remember Jackie when I was younger too.

MasterBruceBalloon I heard it mentioned on the television, I'll pop back with a review once I've received it.

I have, and yes I thought it was really good to see black and mixed girls in a magazine for children. I grew up reading Mandy, Bunty and Jackie and would have benefitted from a magazine like Cocoa Girl.
