We went to a very enjoyable "gym" class at our local place today. It was fab, lots of wedgy things to climb up, bars to walk along, things to hang from, a ground level trampoline and (my fave) a big pit of foam squares.

Anyway, I was there with a group of friends, all our children are around 2. They all had fun, but basically spent the time, climbing up, jumping off, hanging from the bars and screaming with laughter at us flailing in the foam pit.

There was a teacher there who tried to instill some "routine" - basically he wanted them to;

  1. Jump from hoop to hoop.
  2. Walk along a low narrow bar, without us holding their hand.
  3. Do an assisted forward roll.
  4. Do kind of "bunny jumps" (where you put your hands on a wedge and jump your feet) around a big square thing.
  5. Hang by their feet and hands underneath a bar and move along.
  6. Crawl along two parrallel (sp) bars, with a hand and foot on each side, and us supporting their front/underneath.

Which of these things do you reckon your 2 year olds would have been capable of doing?

Oh, and the funny thing is that he would WANT to do it all. The look of concentration on his face is a sight to behold! We started rugby classes on Fridays, and before he kicks the ball I watch him and it is like he is psyching himself up!

Yes, and they would have loved it. They couldn't count to 20 or read a novel though Wink

All children are different and develop at different rates - whilst some of my friends DC were more academic at that stage, mine were well-coordinated and loved physical stuff. At 11 and 13 they still love their sports but will never make national or even regional level, whereas there are obviously other children who have - not necessarily those who were the most physically able at 2!

It's fascinating hearing about all the different levels.

Interestingly, most of ours that I know (in a group of about 10) are really similar in what they can do, both physically and (I guess) mentally - they all started speaking at really similar times, and are just all very similar in their patterns of development which I think has made me think that all children are the same!

Obviously they're not identical, and some are a bit better at chatting and others are good all rounders and others are a bit more physically able, but by and large they have all followed a very similar pattern.

My 8 year old could! Grin My 4 year old might struggle with the upside down and the forward roll. Sounds like the man needs re-training!
