Araminta? Twas Harriet Tubman's original name.

How about Darius?

I like Nativity, Marigold and Vincent. Isaachar is ok, though I like the simplicity of Isaac more.

All the Keysha, Leela, Kayla names out there atm are very wishy-washy to my ear.

Selafina is a bit like selotape and polythene mixed together.

Report
AllieW · 24/02/2010 18:28

Zeilah is ok and I prefer Seraphina/Serafina to Selafina.

Of the boys names, I like Lennox and could be persuaded by Issachar. You might also consider Isaac and Ishmael.

I like the sound of the name Nativity, but really would you do that to your child, they would dread every christmas.

I also like Nativity. I think Marisol sounds like a name for margarine in some country I've lived or holidayed in. Like Patrice.

Keyshia - no, spelling will be nightmare
Najati - yes I like this
Kia - car
Nativity - I like this actually (surprising self)
Aleela - nope, seems made up
Marigold - yes very nice
Zeilah - don;t like names beginning with Z
Chenai - hmm ok
Iqra - not really, esp as not your culture
Selafina - prefer Seraphina
Marisol - lovely name

Boys
Kwame - nice name
Patrice - yep, nice again
Garvey - no horrible
Vincent - no he will be called Vinnie
Lennox - nope
Issachar - no sounds like one of the three wise men

So refreshing to see a more unusual list of names! You've uncovered some lovely ones there. My favourites are Zeilah for a girl, followed by Selafina; Lennox or Issachar for a boy.

Very impressed at how organised you are, picking names before having conceived. Good luck!!

is chenai unisex because I know a boy Chenai. I like Lennox and Kwame too. For a girl I vote Zeilah.

Kia reminds me of this vile song

Not keen on girls names, esp Marigold which makes me think of rubber gloves and Kia which makes me think of the car.

But then what do I know as I don't have the same heritage.

Don't mind your boys names.

I think Zeilah is gorgeous.....and would pick Lennox for a boy.

Good luck choosing.

I don't like many of your girl's names, sorry. Remind me of a Chris Rock 'The ghetto called, they want their name back' skit. Marisol is lovely, but very Spanish. Not sure how it would drop on a non-Spanish person.

I like a couple of your boy's names. Kwame is nice - Ghanian, I think? Do you like Kofi? Issachar is lovely - very heavy, biblical name, though. If you like that sort of name, how about Isaiah or Ezekiel?

Garvey is a rotweiler name in my area of London . Bit like Marley. If you want a black hero name - Nelson? Malik (as in Shabazz - Malcolm X)?

I like Najati and Kwame the best.

Don't like Selafina as it reminds me of cellophane (sp?), and I don't like Nativity, but I quite like all the rest of them.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Thanks mathanxiety for the names link, I will be looking through that soon!

Great to hear peoples opinions. People didn't hate them all as much as I thought!

Huge list of Ethiopian boys' names here, plus a link at the top of the page on the right to girls' names. I suggest Ethiopian names because of the multi-cultural nature of Ethiopia (African, Christian, and links to rasta culture too)

Keyshia -- very popular African American girls' name
Najati -- nice
Kia -- a car, made in Korea
Nativity -- Natalia or Natalie have the same meaning. I would prefer Trinity
Aleela -- nice
Marigold -- somehow reminds me of margarine
Zeilah -- nice, also suggest Zeiba (I know one from Ethiopia)
Chenai -- Chennai is a city in Tamil Nadu
Iqra -- I think it would be a problem that it's a Muslim name and you're not Muslim
Selafina -- Prefer Serafina
Marisol -- Like a lot, I know a few Mexican Marisols, also suggest Maribel (popular in Puerto Rico and PR circles in the US)

Boys
Kwame -- quite a bad association (former disgraced mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick)
Patrice -- no, too much of a girls' name, prefer Partick
Garvey -- Marcus Garvey? Prefer Harvey
Vincent -- Love
Lennox -- ok, but I think of it as a girl's name
Issachar -- prefer Isaac
Jawanza -- sounds like a made-up African American name inspired by Kwanzaa

Epiphany is lovely too. However it could have an unfortunate shortening.

When I worked in Africa I knew several girls called Epiphany which I really liked - similar to nativity in sentiment but to my mind prettier

Maria2007loveshersleep · 22/02/2010 13:52

Actually I'm now changing my mind & I think Marisol is nice...
