I love dd2's name - and importantly so does dh - but I just keep on thinking I should have pushed harder to call her this other name especially as my friend said her dh hated it but she worked on him...........Tell me I'm stupid. PLease!

dd2 has a lovely simple elegant name and this other one is longer, more girly and wouldn't work as well with our long surname but I keep hankering!

Definitely prefer Nina to Matilda. Matilda is getting way too popular for my taste but I bet she'll be the only Nina in her class

Nina is lovely - bet your friend wishes she had thought of it / could have used it! She has had to settle for Matilda lol!

Oh you are all lovely. You have just listed all the reasons we discussed when we chose Nina. You have reminded me of how I was thinking (not just dh)- a name for when she is older, simple, elegant and cool!

I had such a dreadful pregnancy I was wondering if my judgement had been totally skewed.

Thank you ladies! I am still a bit embarrassed and ashamed to be feeling like this (DH thinks Im barking)!!

Nina is so much nicer.

Matilda is ok but I cannot stand Mattie for some reason.

I prefer Nina too. I always liked Matilda when I was younger myself, but since having DC have known a couple of Matildas and while I like the full name I really can't stand any of the nn. I know a Mattie and really don't like that.

You made the right choice, Nina is far more elegant and lovely! And think of Nina Simone... good namesake.

Nina is one of those stylish names dead cool people have and it won't date the way Matilda undoubtably will.

You chose well!!

FWIW, I have always found Matilda a very ugly name.

Nina is far prettier, girlier, and more stylish. You have SO chosen the right name

I love the name nina! that is much nicer than Matilda.

I feel exactly like that, that I should have pushed harder to call dd the name I loved. she has a compromise name, and now i'm split up from her father anyway. She's 7 and I still feel sad that she's not the name I feeeeeeeeel she was meant to be.

It's not needy. Naming your child is a very personal and precious thing.

Yes, have a third!

Report
whelk · 09/01/2010 15:02

I'm sorry to be so needy. Really I need to get a grip. Matilda doesn't go with our surname and DH really hates it.

Really I think that should be enough - oh and Nina is Nina now! And I do love it too. It really suits her and it goes brilliantly with our surname.......

Only one thing for it I'm just going to have to have a third dd and call her Matilda!!!!

Nina is lovely - I wanted to call my DD (when I had one) Nina but then my gorgeous DD arrived fully formed and fully named aged 3 and a half.

So don't worry - I think it's all turned out the right way for you in the end! Mathilda is a really nice name too but Nina is not a common (as in used a lot - before I start a riot) name at all (not round here) and very lovely for a little girl and a grown woman - sorry slight coming over me here!

DD actually has a very very nice name which is often complemented on MN when people ask for advice on names so I can't complain really!

I have a Mathilda. I picked it out aged 4 and there was never any doubt that if I had a girl, she would be Mathilda. She's no Tilly though, not delicate enough. She's Tilda usually and is adamant that she prefers that.

Nina is beautiful and not ridiculously popular like Mathilda which would have taken the shine off a little every time you met another one.

Everybody shortens Mathilda too which is less likely with Nina.

I was never bothered about the name Nina, then I shared a house with a Nina and she was one of the most lovely peoe I have ever met so I now love that name.
She had class - not money but in her attitude and outlook to life.

Matilda is one of names I loved and my DH didn't, luckily my DSister called her firstborn Matilda and I am so pleased that she did. I like having the name in the family.

whelk · 09/01/2010 14:09

Its beautiful isn't it. I think its a name that will be even better when she's older too and elegant and timeless.

Matilda is so passe......so many of them around.... too popular for words... Matilda schmatilda.... tilly schmilly..... and Matilda did tell such terrible lies.... waltzing Matilda.....

Now, for all that comfort, PLEASE tell us what you did call your DD!!
