What do you think of Beryl??
I think i am starting to love it, but would love some opinions please (I have no intentions of talking about names in rl as evryone goes [hmm[!).
Does it go well with Eli, Amos, Pearl and Iris?
Is it going to become immensely trendy/faddy as i am really trying to avoid anything faddy if at all possible.

Well, thanks for the opinions.
I have a VERY long list of both boy and girls names, so maybe i will stick it at the bottom,, and see if it is a grower.
I like it, it has a lovely soft sound, fits nicely with the siblings, but i worry about the Emmerdale thing - i dont watch soaps so was unaware!
Maybe when i am brave enough i will post my giant lists!

Nope - don't like it. Had a horrible boss once called Beryl who was a complete and utter dragon with tight perm and a strange ideas about staff management.

Like it, it's unusual, reminds me a bit of The Liver Birds from TV a longish time ago. It's a kind of semiprecious stone I think, so kind of goes with Pearl, in a way.

I like "old lady" names (like Pearl), but Beryl is one step too far. IMO. However, give it 5 years ........

What about Connie ? (my nanna's name)

if you like it, and you're sure it's not just the hormones deciding on names for you, then go for it. I love the name Sylvie, for instance, and got a very similar response to that name, when i asked for opinions on my favourite names so far. I've decided that i don't give a monkeys and i'll go for it anyway if only i can talk dh round!

Reminds me of a 1950's large pink rounded faced woman with a tight perm. I dislike it sorry.

Haha yes I might think of Beryl if we have another daughter (Im the crazy one calling her DD Finty!) .. at first blush you think hmmm Beryl - but Be or BeBE ... quite cute nicknames

I think Beryl is a great name if you have a bubble perm. A bit daft otherwise.

In as little as 25 years there could be a tracey in a nursing home!

I know of a Tracey. She is about 45 I think. When she was born, her elderly great aunt (now dead) said "but that's a man's name!".

Before that the nursing homes will be full of the Traceys and Waynes-and I still won't like them! It is the reason that I like the classic names-they don't automatically age a person. Elsie is likely to be over 80yrs or under 5 yrs, but Elizabeth can be any age.

Yeah I remember when my cousin's daughter Emily was born in about 1988 I thnk and we all thoguth it was an ironic old lady name. we just thought of emily bishop.

Except in 80 years time, the nursing homes will be full of Storms, Indias and Phoebes and they will be the "ironic elderly names".

Beryl was actually extremely popular for just a very few years. They are all late 70s/early 80s now. One Beryl I know had 4 others in her class at school. I think that's what sets it apart from the other old names - it was only popular for a very short time.

I think thundetrduck must be sctottish - here "Pearl" is pronounced more like "peril" and rhymes with "Beryl"

If there is one name I would have said would not be revived, this was it... but i have seen it twice on MN in the past week now, so clearly it's about to have a moment.

I'm afraid I just don't like it... but if you do, that's the main thing. Probably if you like it, your family is cool enough to pull it off.

Does Coral do anything for you? I think it's prettier.

Piscesmoon, in answer to why people might want to revive old names, if you just shut your eyes, let go of your preconceptions and murmur 'beryl'... is it not a soft sound? I think it is. I know it's subjective though.
