Thinking of using this as a middle name for DD - I love the meaning and would be naming her after her great aunt, but is it too middle aged lady?

It's a lovely name and I don't think of it as an old ladies' name at all.

No she wont hate you if you bring her up in Wales. She'll be annoyed if she lives anywhere else tho as she'll have to go through the rest of her life with people missprounouncing her name

I really love Heulwen,it is beautiful, it doesn't make me think of old ladies, not that thinking of old ladies is too bad at all anyway!

btw I know what you mean about pronounciation. My dds middle name is Grug and my english family are really confused with that one!

diolch mamas12. DH couldn't say Mallt! He says he wants it to be a name he can say properly - fair enough I suppose!
I like Miri, and Mai was my grandmother's name but our surname begins with M so don't think I can have an 'M'...?

just read last night about somebody called Heulwen being called Halloween at school, which has put me off slightly!

Well of course, Eleri is another very cool name . Greta is lovely btw (shame your DH isn't keen on Haf as that would work well).

mamas12 · 04/08/2009 23:01

Greta is welsh migola.
Beth am Mallt? (The english would be Maud - little old ladyish too I suppose)

Greta Mallt sounds great!

I do like Eleri but not sure it goes with first name (nor Heulwen actually!). First name is Greta - not exactly welsh but works in both languages

my little girl (6 weeks old) is Eleri - so I vote for that. What's yr dd's first name?

Congratulations btw. In fact the only bit of Mejon's welsh message I understood was the last sentence with llongyfarchiadau in it. Feel very ashamed for remembering so little welsh

Heulwen is also lovely

TBH, only a few welshers would even have the old-lady thing reaction - everyone else will only be aware of the sheer welshness. My DH isn't welsh but he loved that - is it had been a boy we'd have done Irish-celtic for his side. Maybe next time
Anyway, bravo and good luck on the next few weeks of sleeplessness. (Max Boyce singing "Swansea Town" used to get my LO all calm and sleepy)

Good point barristermum, you've almost convinced me. It's weird that DH wants to go for it and he's English! I guess he doesn't know of the old lady connotations & just loves the meaning.

She was nearly called Cerys actually, and did consider it as middle name but doesn't go with her first name.

I think it's beautiful! The best thing about middle names is the way they tell something about a person's heritage - their family, or culture or whatever and this combines the taffiness and the story of her birth. So it will always be a conversation point.
We called our little girl Cerys - from Cariad, and more often spelt Carys - and we already get a bit of Sarf London "cerise" from non-welshers - but so what!

blushingm · 04/08/2009 11:32

Cariad? maybe
Delyth
Anwen
Seren (very popular at the moment though)
Rhiannon/Rhianydd

Heulwen is pretty - i love the meaning sunshine
