I was in Madrid last week and a mum called out to her boys "Robert, Jesus" just not the kind of thing you hear on the east coast of Scotland had a family friend called Jorge but my older relatives kept calling him "Hey Haw!"

i do like Ysidro and Ignacio as they have good NNs.....Josephine will be middle name if a little girl

I have an Xavier and we live in Spain with a Scottish Mc surname currently pregnant with a baby girl and plan to call her Aaliyah - easy to say both in Spain and Scotland (well, once you have the hang of it I guess ) happy choosing!

Girls:

Ana
Belen
Raquel (too linked to Corrie?)
Josefa
Paloma (my favourite, means dove)

Boys:

Jose
Manuel (I know, but it means Emmanuel, and can be shortened to Manu or Manny)
Gabriel
Ramon (rather sexy actor of 1990s, v. manly name, no?)

I know it's already been suggested but I do think Ines is the ideal name for a Spanish/Scottish baby girl. Obviously it's the Spanish version of Agnes (meaning chaste and patron saint of lambs or something - all good stuff) and Innes is a lovely traditional old Scots name.

For a boy I would go for Inigo which also has both British and Spanish roots. Inigo Jones the architect was a famous bearer (ok so he was probably more Welsh than Scottish if you are being picky). It is being taken up more and more in the UK (I believe the journalist Rosie Millard might have a little Inigo in her brood). Plus it was the name of the swordsman in The Princess Bride "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Errr - perhaps best avoided if your Spanish surname happens to actually be Montoya.

I also just looked at the top 100 Spanish boys names and noticed that Hector is in there - that always works well in Scotland.

Love the name Montserrat, would have gone for it with dd if it didn't clash with my totally Anglo last name... does not quite comply with your criteria of not raising eyebrows in small Scottish town however (as the name I eventually chose for dd does in the small Scottish town I live in).

love madeleine but after the dreadful case of the missing Mccann girl i can't get the association out of my head, which is petty really i know...

monty is a bit middle class for me i'm afraid sounds like the name of a large dog - no offence to any montys or their mummys!!!

oSCar works in Spanish too. In fact, he might sound completely Spanish with the name Oscar.

What about Clara?

I know what you mean about your village!! I was brought up in a tiny village. Even on the rare occassions I mistakenly thought somebody was a stranger, they'd mutter, ah, that's one of Beatrice and Fred's children, the youngest, the youngest girl. Stop smoking or I'll tell your mum.

I think Roscoe is one of those Scottish/Scandinavian names, a bit like Magnus or Kirsten. But the O on the end of it ties in Scotland and Spain (loosely!)
