What d'ya think to Suki?

I'm not pregnant or planning to become so for quite a while, hands full with DS at mo, but me and partner have that 'what do you think of ...... for a girl/boy' conversation from time to time, and i always mention Suki or Layla for a girl and Rudy for a boy. Just wondered about other peoples views. I've already got a Finley so would need something to go alongside that. Always nice to be prepared for the occasion!

Suki sounds like a nickname for Suzuki Confused

Why ever not? It’s an Arabic name, meaning ‘night,’ not exclusively a Muslim name.

suki sounds like a nickname not a "proper" name IMO

Cor blimey, ladies! Didn't think i'd cause such a stir when i put the post up. True, Suki sounds like the name of something fluffy that sits on ur lap, maybe thats why i make lip kissy sounds everytime i see a kid name Felix or Rex! Sometimes people read to much into meanings of names, we're narrowing down our options at this rate, cos whatever we call our kids we'll be criticized at some point. Can't help of Billy Piper at the mo - Winstons the name i'm giving to my bulldog when i can afford one...

oh, bling, harpo! but diamonds are so environmentally unsound. i think i'd need to do a search on QVC for the appropriate CZ equivalent.

I have a friend, Leila pronounced Leela. How are you all pronouncing it? I don't think she's ever been stopped at an airport though...

harpomarx · 21/10/2008 19:34

ah yes, Rudy...

quite a cute name, know someone who called their boy that a few years ago. Possibly a bit too cute for an adult?

I think it's a pretty name, though irredeemably linked in my mind with a golden retriever. Wouldn't stop me from using it either.

Think Layla/Leila is lovely too though that seems to be a bit of a topic on this thread at the moment. Fwiw, I haven't yet seen a convincing reason as to why you shouldn't use it .

what was the other name again? will go and have a look and let you have my opinion!

I like the name Suki but thats because we called our dog suki. I got the name from a girl I knew at school. I remember the day the teacher told us a new girl called suki was coming and I thought she was an eskimo!!
I was only 9 at the time.

I do like Suki, but I'd put Susan or Susannah on the birth cert.

I prefer Susie to Suki actually.

Suki not an awful name though. It would really grow on me.

most people DON'T KNOW that Layla is a muslim name!!!

moreover, by this line of argument, if you are called Sarah or Rachel you are automatically Jewish?

Report
blackhawk · 21/10/2008 18:25

She will be profiled at every airport?

rofl

I've lived in the middle east, and in the United States and I knew more Laylas in the US than I did in Saudi.

It is no longer exclusively a Muslim name, but a name that has muslim origins.
