Baby names

Names you love but could never use

Hey everyone!

Currently in the hoping and praying stage of babies, but can't stop thinking of names. I have thrown a few out there to my husband who has vetoed them all! I did get him to agree to Ezra though.

Just wondering what names everyone loves but would/could never use. Here are mine

Nyx (boy)
Lyra
Ember
Ezekiel
Raphael (Raffy for short!)
Rhys
Rowan (boy, husband's name so definite no go)

Just for fun :)

I secretly love the name Hunter for a boy. I get why everyone hates and couldn’t use it.

Ariel (inspired by the character in the Tempest) and Ursula which essentially means She-Bear. I love both names, but thanks to one Disney movie they’re both pretty untouchable!

I love the name Autumn but I just don’t think me and DH look like we would have a daughter called Autumn !
@JaninaDuszejko, is that how the Elisa Lam conspiracy relating to the spread of TB on skid row came about?
I thought this too! Makes a bit more sense now why Lam Elisa was a thing. They should have mentioned that in the netflix doc!

Torey for a boy.

Kreszenz for a girl. I also like Araminta like some of the other pp.

My husband wouldn’t let me give our son the middle name Wolfgang. (He said it will just make people think of Mozart. Idk why that’s so bad to him). So that’s off the cards for all future sons we might have.

I also like some Irish names that I could never use because I don’t know how to say them (Cearbhall)

Araminta! I just think it’s gorgeous but I know better than to saddle a child with it 🤣

Rafferty
Felix
Kit
Caspian
Arlo
Flynn

I'm currently pregnant with DD2 (and not intending to have any more) so now all I can think of are boys' names!

Etta .. animal surname so say Etta Peacock (not real surname)

Similarly any nature based names (winter etc) wouldn’t sit right.

Also Eira and Eirlys - Welsh names, pronunciation would sound wrong in England.

Ariadne - beautiful name, but might be bit much paired with a double barrelled surname.

Priya - beautiful name, Sanskrit, from Hindu mythology - wouldn't be very appropriate for white, British child.

Griffin - love it - might be a bit 'out there'

I also really like bernadette at the mo. It means brave bear. Not sure dh would go for it though.

Esyllt Sad I'm in England so the Ll would be mispronounced as L and she'd be called Ess-ilt. My Mam's side of the family are native Welsh speakers and would be able to pronounce it but my Dad's side and all DH's family would never manage it.

Iseult - no way DH would agree
Iona - we would use the Welsh 'Yonna' pronunciation but the 'Eye own uh' pronunciation is more well known

Iago - the connotations from Othello and Aladdin, also it would be mispronounced as Ee-ar-go.
Rhisiart - it's just a bit much and the Rh would be mispronounced.

All Shakespeare names!

Ophelia (terrible connotations)
Lysander (so pretentious)
Oberon (also pretentious but I did give this name to my cat instead)
Iago (terrible connotations)
Hermione (bloody HP made it too popular)
Prospero (too pretentious)
Juliet (hate Jules as nn but we gave it to DD as a middle name)
Montague (I know it’s a surname but I love it as a boy’s first name. Suspect I’ll have to get a dog and name it this at some point)
Horatio (pretentious)

And Lola and Lyra because they sound terrible with our surname

@DietrichandDiMaggio

My children are adults, but at the time Holly, because they would have been Holly Wood.

I like Holly, but we have a a Ben(jamin) so that’s out!

I love Flora, but OH doesn’t like it at all.

Lana.

Loved it and planned it for my DD until I read on here about spelling it backwards

Aristides
Valentine
Amadeus
Konstantin
Sahil

Eurydice/Eurus
Ophelia
Aishwarya
Jaya
Itohan

Some of these are a no-go because they would raise an eyebrow on a white child or are in the realms of appropriation. Others seem pompous coughAmadeuscough

Self-vetoed - Edwina (‘wiener’ sound), Eerika (too odd), Gretchen (feels burdensome with the ‘retch’ sound but I LOVE its ugly-cool), Pippa (blowjobs), Renfri (Witcher).

OH vetoed - Heidi, Indiana/Indie, Isolde (adore 😫), Thebe, Tilda (adore but just keeps banging on about rice), Xanthie and probs tons more I haven’t ran past yet. For boys Jethro - I got laughed out of town, probably for the best.

There have been some pleasantly surprising agreements though, relieving as taste is vastly different.
