I love this name. I know it's in the top ten, but I don't meet many. There's one in my eldest daughter's school but it's hyphenated with something else.

How many do you meet?

DD1 is Lily - didn't even consider checking any popular name lists prior to calling her it - it just suited her as soon as we saw her. It's paired with Eva but as a middle name after her great grandmother.

Each to their own maggie :) Doesn't make anybody more or less of a 'herd follower' to pick a popular or a less popular or a 'middle ground' name - they might simply be following different herds Wink

I didn't want to call my child a super popular name, nor a really yoonique one either. There are plenty of names in the middle ground. Lily is popular but may have passed its peak. I wouldn't use it if you don't like being a herd-follower.

I much prefer Rose but hang out regularly with a little Rosie who is a friend of my DD1 and whose mum is also a good friend of mine. Think it would seem nutty to call my baby Rose in those circumstances.

Lovely name, I know 9 ranging in age from 3 moths to 8 years. Some hyphenated with Rose, Mae, Grace and Haf.

Know loads, most have the middle/hyphenated name Rose or May/Mae/Mai.

Yes Abit they both had a Lily! They don't live in the same city though so it doesn't cause too much confusion.

Plus, just looking at the top 100 names for 2015 and Lily was number 9. Apparently there were 2,965 girls named Lily that year but that's for the WHOLE country! not that bad I don't think?!

I would use it if you love it. I know of one Lily in our area and my children go to two different schools. I think when people talk about popularity they often don't think about it being a regional thing. I have a Jack, obviously it's been a top 3 name for a very long time! For two years my Jack was the only Jack in the school (we live in East Anglia) but there were two Zack's and more William's, Oliver's and Harrys then you could shake a stick at. Even now there is only one other Jack. You could always have a more unusual second name. I would still pick Lily for the first name if its your gut instinct to use it and you love it!

Jings so did the two sisters end up both calling their daughters Lily?

I know two sisters who had a stand off during their pregnancies when they both decided to call their daughter Lily. They both stuck to their guns, although I think they've made peace with each other now Grin

I do know a lot of girls called Lily. Nice name though.

I love the name Lily but it's super popular around us - there's lots of Lily's and variations there of. So I looked at other flower names (as I think they're all gorgeous) and settled on Iris in the end which suits my DD perfectly.
However- that's just me. If you love Lily then have Lily!

I love it. It's my DDS name though. It is popular but other than my own I only know one other Lily. We were between Lily and Lucy.

I know one Lily and one Lilli

That's in 10 yrs of child related stuff.

If you like it, you should use it. Names are popular because a lot of people like them. It isn't a bad thing. Plus I always think that if you are called Grace Jones or Jack Evans or something, you will be completely un-googlable as an adult, which considering the way things are going, will be a bonus!

I love the name Lily but as I grew up with a top ten name, so i know from experience how annoying it is to be one of several in your class.

I know 3 babies born in the past couple of years named varients of Lily ( 2 Lily's and one Lileigh Confused yes really!)

Nana I feel your pain I am trying to get people to think outside the box. I have a 9 year old whose 4 friends at school are all called Eve! Aargh yes these are nice names but why does everyone choose the same 10 names?!

Oh god - Sooooo many - 2 in our road, 1 great niece, my DIL's sister's girl, 3 in my GD's class (Year 1) Kerala you make a good point but the names you give which are all lovely aren't going to be liked by people who call their children Lily, Evie, Isabella and Ella, usually with a middle name of Mae!

Report
KERALA1 · 15/05/2016 22:42

There is a middle ground between lily / top ten and a mad name eg messiah. How about Zoe, Miranda, Mary, Philippa all normal nice names now underused because everyone calling their daughters lily, Eve, isabel and Ella.

It's a pretty name but it is quite popular. There are 2 in DS1's nursery (out of 10 girls) and 3 in DS2's year group (of 30 girls)

Really pretty and popular for a reason. I don't get this trying to give your child a bizare name just to be different. Yes you don't want your child to be 1 of 5 in a class but what's the chances really.

It is a lovely name but quite prevalent nowadays and may "date" quickly.

Where I originally come from, there are several Lily's - some spelled with two "L"s, some hyphenated.

There was one at the dc's school (200ish pupils too). I think it's beautiful
