Thoughts on Alister/Alistair

Wondering what people think of Alister? Is it dated?

Also, how would you spell it?
Alister
Alistair

What do you think of these:
Alister David
Alister Jeffrey

Middle names are family names, DS1 has a family middle name too.

Thanks!

Mine is known as Ali Boo-Boo.
I really hope I can stop calling him that when he is a teenager...

Love Alistair (nn Ally)!

I love the name but I am biased as I have a 4 year old Alastair! I had never come across another one until he started nursery. There is another Alastair in his nursery class, they were born one week apart, spell their name the same way and will be going to the same school so will forever be known by their name followed by surname initial.

DS1 on the other hand, has a top 10 name and is the only one in his year.

I would go with Alastair as the spelling or Alistair People often spell my son's name Alistair so it may be easier to use that if you don't want to keep correcting people.

Alistair and Alasdair are the ones I tend to come across most often (in Scotland).

Maybe your DH likes Alister Mcrae, the rally driver? If you Google Alister it comes up a lot.

I think Alastair and Alistair are the two most common spellings.
It's a gorgeous name!

Thank you all! Alistair is definitely a contender! The only thing I'm a bit worried about is the spelling - I had to spell my maiden name every time I said it so I am worried about him having to spell his name as there are so many variants. DS1 has a nice easy name and we have a fairly simple surname.

I think it's a lovely name, but ruled it out as I prefer to choose names with only one usual spelling, and the number of accepted spellings made my head hurt. We have a surname which has to be spelt, so have tried to avoid first names that need the same treatment! (Isobel went the same way!)

Alistair - I'm not a massive fan, but it's a nice enough name.

Alistair David is nicer.

I like it. It's quite unusual these days. I'd go for the Alistair spelling.

DS2 has a Gaelic name, I resisted the attempt by DH to spell DS1s the gaelic way though. Its a very normal name and the Gaelic version would have meant him constantly spelling it out. DS2s was a compromise and I got the name and he got to spell it. Even DH said that he wouldn't spell Alastair with a d - must be the Billy Connelly influence :o

The d spellings just seem so wet. you need to spell it with a t :)

I think Alistair and Alasdair look right. The rest of them need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Especially you Allysdair.

And not forgetting Alasdhair.

Far too many ways to spell this name. Plus they're always a big smug I find.

I know an Alastair (named for the cricketer) and an Alistair. Like both spellings - not a name I hear very often.

And from your options I like Alastair David the best.
