We don't know if we're having a girl or a boy, but since having DD we've always loved Margot for a second girl. Thing is, our DD is called Edith (she gets called Edie) and, although I've never seen the film, I'm aware these are main characters in Despicable Me. Do you think people would make the connection?

Thanks for the ideas - it seems there are very few boys names we like enough though, which is frustrating! Contenders over the last few months have been Hugo, Spike, Sebastian, Jude and others that I've probably forgotten, but I'm not sure any of these are 'the one'.

Thanks for all the positive comments! From this thread, a minority of people would make the connection so it feels pretty safe. We'll probably have a boy now though, and we really have no boys names .. Ideas welcome ;)

Art, does your friend know that Margaux is a type of wine - a very nice red!

Gorgeous name, I didn't make the connection and most people won't. Go for it!

I would (and did) make the connection, but I have seen the Despicable Me films lots and lots of times (slightly obsessed small boys!). I don't think that it matters though, most people won't be all that familiar with Despicable Me and it will soon be forgotten. Lovely name!

Love the name, and didn't make the connection!

I've seen the films but I didn't make the connection. I think the names are beautiful together.

I'm afraid I'd make the connection straight away, sorry!

I have seen the films a million times and I didn't make the connection. I think madthing4 who is six would as he is obsessed but in a "wow cool names like despicable me kids" way.

Also as your kids are little now it won't be so popular among their age group.

Lovely name, go for for it.

Margot and Edith are lovely together. Don't change from the original spelling though. As a previous poster said, you'll only need to correct people once and I think most people would pronounce it right anyway.

Margot was in our list. But we have boys!

A friend has now named her child this but it's spelt Margaux

I was just thinking yesterday what a lovely name Margot is.

You're right Devon - I don't think we'd actually deviate from the original spelling anyway. Thanks all!

no don't do that! Margot is the right spelling and it only takes one reminder to correct a mispronounciation, I don't think most people will get it wromg anyway. Lovely names!

Thanks everyone, especially petshopgirl - if you watched it yesterday and didn't make the connection that's pretty good for us! I'm aware of different pronunciations - I like the t spelling, but I know some people might not realise it should be silent so we could always go with margo if it feels like an issue I guess.

Nice name but beware about the different pronunciations, the French way (Mar-goh) vs the German (Mar-gott).

Gorgeous names! Margot was on our shortlist but a friend named their baby Margot so we didn't Sad but Smile for them!

Margot can be shortened to Maggie as well which is just lovely.

Congrats!
