Baby names

Are these names "chavvy"?

Hi all.

Expecting first DC (a son). I do love traditional names like Alexander, Thomas, Joseph and Harry but fear they are a little too popular. I was one of 5 Clare's in my class at primary and my DH always had two or three others with the same name in his class's so we definitely want something a bit less common (may use one of the above as a mn)

Two of my favourites are Austin and Mason but DH insists they are "chavvy" (his words not mine! It's more for lack of a better word than him being horrible snobbish)

He really likes Lucus but I'm afraid I can't get "mucus" out of my head! He seems to be coming round a bit to Austin but is more fearful of what others may think of it. What do you all think when you hear Austin and Mason?

Don't know if you have seen this yet but this animated gif graph is amazing and very relevent to this discussion. It is about the metoric rise of boys names ending in "n" like Austin and Mason. It is from the US but to a lesser degree woukd say this applies to the UK. Also kind of proves my assumption that "n" names are not so much chavy but American (which is usually bundled into the chavy catagory albeit.

The comments section after the blog is quite funny too.

I like Austin but not Mason. I don't think chavvy but I don't like surnames as first names.

Every Luke I know just get bombarded with the Star Wars thing constantly. I don't like Lucas either.

I like Austin and wouldn't consider that Chavvy. Don't mind Mason or Lucas either.

"You can hardly compare Lucas to Kyle"

WTF is that supposed to mean?

You know, I used to think and say that certain names were chavvy, but then I read people online slating my sons name because it is a little bit unusual and it really hurt so I stopped. It felt like people were insulting my defenseless baby so maybe you should stop? Fair enough not liking a name and being kind by saying 'I wouldn't personally use that name' but slagging off kids and writing them off as 'common' and unfair. All children have amazing potential and are beautiful and shouldn't be boxed away.

Much prefer the traditional names. Really not fond of Mason at all - sorry!

Having said that our ds has THE most common name in our area which we had genuinely no idea when we picked it and it's a name closely associated with chavs ... and our dd has a very unusual "posh" name so I do believe boundaries are becoming more blurred between names etc. As long as you like it I don't think it matters really.

No, I doubt Kardashian gals have anything to do with it. MNers are insufferable snobs without need of Sleb influence.

Does the 'chavvy' thing for Mason come from the Kardashian?

Lucas is the name of my children's PE teacher.

He is a God.

There are long threads on MN about traditional but uncommon (nowadays) names.
Try Mark, John or Paul. Any apostle, really!

Ubiquitous I think is the word I was looking for.

"Lucas is experiencing a moment around here. It's a name I used to love but I think in this crop of babies it's going to be the equivalent of Kyle"

What does that mean rhondajean?

Traditional is almost always going to be a better long run choice for any child. I would say that Austin or Mason are chavvy, but they are not in the same league as Alexander, Thomas or Joseph. Harry I'm not over keen on tbh.

as in Austin Powers? I don't really like it, and I didn't know Mason was an actual name as such. It references craftsmen, eg. stone mason - does this have any significance to you or your DH? Personally I like your traditional names. How about Nicholas or Sebastian?

The traditional names are far better.

Agree with your husband.

Chavvy to me is common and overly fancy or made up, ie Chantelle, Kayden etc. Austin and Mason are just common, bit downmarket.
Lucas is a fantastic name.
