If you like Alexander but not Alex, you could call him Alec, Sandy, Sacha, Xander for short...

Your girls' names are all lovely; two of them are in my DD's name!

I like Austin and Roman, bored of Alexander, dislike Lennon.
Suggest Ieuan, Macsen, Jonathan, Elliot, Cormac, Joseph.
I like Beatrice and Emma, Violet always makes me think violent when I see it written. The others are a bit Meh to me. If you like Betsy, you could always have it as a nn for Beatrice.
I like mybatman's girl suggestions, and also suggest Eleri, Julia, Cassia.

I like Roman from your list. I have a nephew Parker which I was unsure on at first, but he's 3 now and so entirely wonderful that I love it :).

From your girls list I like Beatrice and Emma/Emily (Emily is incidently Parker's older sister).

Suggestions:

Boys:
Elijah
James

Girls:
Louisa
Eloise
Elsa
Romilly
Alicia
Susanna
Eleanor
Anna (which means Grace as far as I know)
Erin

I like Honor, though not as much as Verity Smile
Not at all keen on Betsy, though Bess or Beth are OK nicknames for Elizabeth.

Some nice names mentioned for boys, I prefer Philip spelt the traditional way with only one 'L'.
Roman is still way out ahead for me though.

Alexander
Harry (Harri to me is the female nn of Harriet)
Austen

Sophie
Emily
Matilda
Grace
Beatrice
Violet

Other names I can suggest

Alistair
Christopher
Phillip
Ethan

Camilla
Primrose
Clemency
Erin

Honor is lovely. My dh likes traditional names while I like more vintage and feminine names.

So looking like Alexander or Roman. I also like Parker but don't know if it'll date.

We worked our list down to a shortlist of 10 each. Then changed the name of the bump every week (knew the gender though) at home just talking between us. Weirdly some of our favourite names on paper just didn't work for us at all.

I always liked the name Honor for a girl too - a bit old fashioned and not too common?

I too, found lots of names for girls that I really liked - found it much, much harder to find names for boys!

Boys
Roman - I like this
Austin - dislike
Magnus - dislike
Lennon - dislike
Harri - strongly dislike
Alexander - Love (what about Alaisdair if you don't like Alex?)

I also like the names David, Tobias, Stephen, James, Michael,Sebastian, if any help?

Girls
Grace - Nice (lots of them, though!)
Beatrice - Not my favourite. Prefer Elizabeth
Sophie - Pretty - also like Sophia
Violet - Least favourite.
Matilda - Nice
Emma/Emily - like them both

I really like Verity - as previously suggested, beautiful name.

I like Grace and Violet out of the girls names. And Alexander by miles out of the boys names.

Report
lambychop · 10/04/2014 11:29

Not to keen on Xander, I do like Lex just concerned that people may always shorten to Alex as it's the most common nn.

Did anyone else find boys names this hard!?

Not fussed on Victoria. Thinking Elizabeth and use Bettsy as a nn? Also like Pearl,Iris,Marianne.

Gosh my list is growing instead if shrinking.

Alexander can be shortened to Xander?

Report
oscarwilde · 10/04/2014 11:06

Since you like the classics
Flora
Victoria - shortened to Tor or Tory rather than Vicky

Boys
Emlyn or Ethan
Theo
Frederick [Freddie is charming for a small boy]
I like Roman, Harri and Alexander personally

Alexander. He could be known as Ally instead of Alex- I have a 'just Alex' (Alexander too long with our db surname and we knew we'd never use the full name) and he chose to call himself this for a while, have also taught a teenage one who did this. Or he could be Xander, Sandy, or just Al (know an adult one who does this).

Grace or Emma for girls. Don't like Violet or Matilda, the others are ok.

The only Harri I have known was a girl - just to warn you (she was Indian and it was short for something).

The girls names are/have been pretty popular. Eg. I knew a class with 3 girls called Grace in it.

Roman - not keen
Austin - ok
Magnus - hate this name
Lennon - like, I know a very cute toddler called this
Harri - ok
Alexander - the best on this list

Grace - adore this name!
Beatrice - not keen
Sophie - like
Violet - like
Matilda - dislike
Emma/Emily - like Emma, Emily is ok

If you like Roman for a boy, what about a Roma/Romy for a girl? Smile

Josephine

Out of your list of names for a boy, I like Austin, and Alexander is okay. I'm not too keen on the rest of them (but then again, that's just me).

For a girl, I prefer Grace and Matilda over the rest of your suggestions, and Sophie is a very safe choice as it is timeless and a classic. Betsy is also very cute, although it might not pass the "High Court Judge" test ;)

However, at the end of the day, you will be naming your child. Give him/her a name which suits them on the day you meet your baby!

Cross posted, every other girl around here is called Ava-rose/Mai/grace at the moment. A shame because it's a beautiful name.

I think my girls names are a little safe, any similar but more unusual you can think of? I like Aurelia, Betsy and Primrose but don't know if they are a bit poncy.

I like all the boys' ones apart from Austin and Lennon. Particularly like Harri and Alexander. The latter could be shortened to Xander rather than Alex.

The girls ones: don't like Sophie (think it sounds like a cat's name), Matilda
or Emily (I think they're old-lady names). Emma's fine but not very interesting. Violet is my favourite of your choices.

How about Ava (with an a, as in Gardner)? And I like Marcus for a boy.

Megrim · 10/04/2014 09:52

I think Emmeline can be either pronunciation - the only one I know is Emma lean.

Boys
Roman - I adore this name
Austin - like
Magnus - least favourite
Lennon - ok but I'd assume a love of Beatles
Harri - dullish but ok
Alexander - nice, versatile, classic

Girls
Grace - ok
Beatrice - quite nice
Sophie - dull but classic
Violet - dislike, for some reason it always makes me thing 'violent'
Matilda - very popular, but nice
Emma/Emily - classic, nice...

All your girls names are sort of... nice. But not very exciting!

Dylan is nice but don't like the Welsh pronounciation Dull-ann. Also Hugh sounds to close to you in my accent. Is Emmeline Emma lean or Emma line?

And following the Welsh theme, how about Dylan, Huw or Hywel for a boy?
