Lovely name but I like Rachel best. Sorry, OP.

Blaine, if you have a member of your family called Racheal, they can't spell. Catholic or not. Although I'm sure the Good Lord will forgive them.

I meant rare, not is. Obviously.

Rachel is very is these days. Something like 200 born in the last year of ONS baby name statistics (2012?)

I was thinking pheobe too! Racheal would be pronounced ray-cheel, just as pheobe would be pronounced fee-obe. Rachael is a pretty spelling though.

It is Rachael. Easy to remember as A before E in the alphabet.
Of course I am biased. Rachel is acceptable if not common

My dd is called Phoebe and yes we have had some choice spellings!

maitaimojito · 08/03/2014 19:16

In my experience Rachels have always been lovely and Rachaels less so which would make me favour spelling it without the second 'a'.

I also think it looks much nicer when written down and reduces the issue of the 'Racheal' spelling error.

Rachel from preference as that's the spelling used by the ones I grew up with.

My cousin recently married a lovely Rachael and my dyslexic brain makes the same mistake as the OP every time I write it.

Oh dear, Thurlow.

You'd think the registry office would point it out... Those poor kids having to go through life with everyone remarking on it! I wonder if the parents ever realise they got it wrong and try to correct it?!

My dog is called Phoebe. The kennel can't spell it and it comes back written a different way each time. I don't think she minds, but a child would!

Please don't do this.

Report
usualsuspect33 · 08/03/2014 18:47

Has she spelt it wrong by any chance?

Thurlow · 08/03/2014 18:24

Rachel/Rachael - nice. One of DD's middle names after a family member but I've grown to like it. You don't hear it much nowadays, but everyone knows it.

Racheal - just looks like a misspelling.

(Antoinette, I think last year's name data had half a dozen Pheobe's on the list!)

I met a Pheobe the other day. She pointed out that I was spelling her name wrongly when I wrote 'Phoebe'. OP, is your spelling deliberate too?

FWIW, I think both Pheobe and Racheal just look like errors, and even if they're deliberate I think most people will assume they're errors.

Rachael is the biblical spelling, rather than specifically Catholic, I think.

Rachel is far easier for everyone to spell. Dont know about the name though seems a bit dated.

I have a member of my family named this with that spelling. Apparently its the catholic spellingHmm

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/03/2014 18:07

If you google, there are people who DO spell it like that. Not many, though, I bet. And they are wrong anyway. Grin

I once had a client who spelt it like the OP did and I had to grit my teeth every time I had to read or write it

HyvaPaiva · 08/03/2014 18:04

That's not how you spell it. It's Rachel or Rachael. Please don't give your child a name even her parent can't spell!

Report
SadFreak · 08/03/2014 17:57

Rachel is my preferred spelling and it is a lovely name imo.
