Malachy?

We already have a Niall (DH's mum's side are Irish) and really struggled to decide on that one but we love it now and DS is 2. We are expecting DC2 and DH's family are ALL boys for generations so I want to get thinking. I really like Malachy (pronounced Mal-a-kee) but saw that the meaning is 'God's servant' or something which put me off a bit (we're atheist, ha!). I could definitely ignore the so-called 'meaning' though I think. My other favourite is Flynn but my DH said his mum's family had poodles called Flynn so we're not allowed! What do you think? We need Irishy but not whacky/hard to spell or pronounce...

hatsy

I only knew about the Mal-ak-eye pronunciation!
the other does sound malarkey, so I wouldn't choose to sound it out that way.

would Malachy be Irish spelling too?

malachy is lovely - and I prefer the mal-a -kee pronunciation. Surely the mal-ak-eye pronunciation is Jewish not Irish?

I know one and his Mum didn't consider the meaning - I just don't think its relevant?

I also like Ardal, Arlo and Ivo - any good?

I've always loved Lachlan with Lachy as a diminutive.

Dh would only consider English names as he is English and had never heard any Scots or Irish Gaelic names, he thought I was making them up!

footle

Malachi means "my messenger" or "my angel"

the last syllable is pronounced "kai", to rhyme with "hi".

other spellings of the name are Malakai - the "y" spelling is actually not listed frequently.

I really like Malachy. Malachi/chai is great too, so long as your DS is prepared for when his schoolmates are old enough to watch Children of the Corn! Grin

Anlon - never heard of it
Donal - ok but a bit boring
Farron - have only heard as a surname Farren
Gil - Scott Heron? good if you're jazz fans
Lorcan - geeky, irrititaing, swotty school prefect type
Oran - people will think it's Aran, Aaron and many other names.

Malachy is far better than all of those!

You CANNOT have a Niall and a Quinn, unless you're a scary enthusiastic Niall Quinn fan? I mean he was a good footballer and apparently is a lovely man but...................NO!

I'm not so keen on Mal part of Malachy - sounds a little negative to me.

I love Quinn and think that Niall and Quinn go well together. Also quite like Oran.

Okay, seriously:
I love Malachy. I am an atheist and my DC all have Hebrew names (tbf, to do with my family). I also like nicknames available for it- Allie, etc;

I love Malachy. There's a gorgeous one in DD's class.

Flynn is the name of the hero in Tangled/Orlando Bloom's child and I fear about to go the way of Aiden as a result.

I like Conal or Connell a lot - know a gorgeous one. I also know two Cuans - great name. Oh well.

How about:
Declan
Cormac (Mac or Corey for short)
Tiernan
Rían (pron. Ree-en)
Ruan
Fiachra (pron. Fee-Ach-ra)
