So if you've seen my previous posts you know that my unusual name for Dd1 plus a picky list of requirements means that I'm struggling to find a name for dd2.

Here's our not so short list rather than whether you like them or not (as I realise I have an acquired taste Smile) but if they 'go with' dd1 called Briar?

Nb by 'match' I am looking for a name that is underrated/unique-ish rather than have a nature/floral theme etc...

Elizabeth (Effie)
Ellis
Eris
Felicity
Margot
Helena (Nell/Leni)
Cassidy (Cassidy)
Julia (Jules)
Hester (Hettie)
Xanthe
Lois
Margaret (maggie)
Carrie
Celia
Enid
Halle
Judy
Francesca
Stephanie
Nancy
Eloise
Agatha
Miriam
Miranda
Meredith
Georgina
Leigh
Talitha

Sorry I know it's long but I am lost and confused and 38 weeks!!!

When I read the OP I was really hoping that Eira would be on the list as it was the immediate name that jumped out at me as a lovely name to go with Briar. However, it's not there, so in that case I'd definitely say Elis/Eris are another lovely combination.

And I love nina too! You have great taste!

Thx all! How do we feel about Nina?

I'm not keen on the name Effie but think Hester or Ellis would go well with Briar.

Love the name Nancy.

How about Morgan? Or Sydney?

I love Hester, but Margot is also nice.

As for Hadley, it happens to be a pretty crappy bit of my old home town so I have bad associations - if you're not from the midlands though, go for it!

And on that note, what about Sydney?

How about Erin? Goes very well with Briar.
And also maybe Siddalee? She is the principal character in The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

I also like Xanthe because the X makes it rather prickly ... just like Briar?!

I think you are talking about a poetic sort of 'match' for Briar? I think that is the reason the more traditional names don't go well, as lovely as some of them are. It is a short name with strong structure and not a traditional 'pretty' name. I think the names like Tanith, Eris and Talitha go for this reason, and also because they don't have lots of different letters, if you see what I mean, which the 'pretty' names have but the 'strong' names don't. I like Talitha because it uses the 'i' and 'a' vowels, and has a repeated consonant 't' in that same way that Briar has the repeated 'r', so that gives it a match (to my mind!). I also like Cassia mentioned above.

Other suggestions: Aster, Seren (two star names there!), or Nina (poss sounds too similar to Briar)?

What about:
Cassia
Lark
Elise or
Tanith

From your list I think
Ellis, Xanthe and Talitha go well, I love Talitha and wish we had considered it longer for DD2. We crossed it off because we thought people might pronounce it like Tabitha rather than Tal-leetha but it is a beautiful name

P.S. Have you heard of Emmott Syddall? If not google her - beautiful but sad story.

Or Carlisle - nicknames could be Carly or Isla.

Or:

Gervaise (pronounced 'jur-vace' with the emphasis on 'vace')
Arden
Emmott

What about:

Marley
Finley (love this for a girl)
Darcy
Quinn
Taylor
Aubrey (still used for boys more than girls here but a top 20 girls name in America)

My sister had the same problem when she was expecting her DD. She ended up using our Great Grandma's middle name (Della). Not saying you should use that name Grin but it might be worth finding out what names go back in your family because you may love one of them and it will also have a lovely meaning for you Smile

The only issue of waiting to register to the name is my dd1 I worry no name then suddenly a name will confuse her! : /

Nancy is lovely.

Book the registry office for 6 weeks after the birth and in the mean time tell everyone the baby is nameless and try out different names

Report
jobwoes · 07/11/2013 17:24

In that case what about Hadley?

Completely unhelpful I know, but if none of those names are jumping off the list at you, I would say none of them are 'the' name.
