Is Sophie too popular, and do you think it will date?

I know it's been in the top 5 for years but I don't know any little Sophies at all... and our surname is v uncommon and always being spelt wrong, so I would love something easy to spell for her sake.

Other thoughts...
Anna
Sylvie
Tess

It's a pretty name and I think it has become fairly timeless. It isn't to my taste but I don't think it's objectionable in any way. FWIW dd has a very simple and quite popular name, although I think it's a bit more classic than Sophie, because like you we have a fiendishly unusual and idiosyncratic last name. We loved Madeleine but it just wouldn't have fair. That's why DS got a very simple name with no alternative spellings too.

They sparkle btw :)

I've just had a phone call about another new Sophie arriving into the world! Maybe it's just me, I know all the Sophies. Grin

I know Sophies from 46 down. I think it's one of those names that is steadily popular but never trendy. I have a dd named Sophie and it was a top 5 name when she was born, but she is the only Sophie out of 110 in her year at school. There are two in my other DDs year. I think it's a classic name, which makes sense as it's a Greek name. My DD has an exciting middle name to make up for the ultra conventional first name.

I'd prefer to meet a baby Michelle than another Sophie.

As a mum to a Sophie Louise I may be biased but it's a beautiful name.

She ia bright, feisty and independent. I don't feel there is anything that cqn be seen as dated or twee and there are more "original" names that are more common in dcs years.

I bet your names lovely Smile

Honestly wasn't being snobby. I really love Michelle actually. It must be due a revival?

No I'm not Smile Although I'm not mad about my name!

I think Sophie is a beautiful name that wont date. Sophia is also lovely.

Anna is quite pretty but I don't like Tessa or Tessa. My childhood next door neighbour had a terrier named Tessa.

Well the only other possible conclusion wouldbe that you think having a popular name in a particular time is Embarassing.

Are you named Michelle or Sharon and dislike it?

CommanderShepard · 25/10/2013 21:57

I know one little Anna and several big ones - it's a lovely name and the little one is adorable (and has an unusual surname so a "simple" forename balances it). Funnily enough my initial reaction was "god I know loads of Sophies" and on further consideration I only know one.

Not insinuating anything (not sure how you came to the wild conclusion that I may be embarrassed about what decade someone was born in???) I was just my giving my opinion.

It was my post and actually there was nothing snobbish about it. I did not suggest they were names to be ashamed of.

I said that you could reasonably accurately age anyone with the names because they were so popular in a particular period.

Please be accurate when attempting to pick holes in others comments Hmm

Unless of course YOU are insinuating there is something to be embarassed about by being born in a particular decade??

The tone of the post was snobby squoosh It suggested that they are names 2 be embarrassed about. Snobbery.

I love Sophie Louise that's really nice together.

I think Sophia will be the more fashionable choice and more likely to date to an era.

Report
squoosh · 25/10/2013 21:01

I don't see why that's snobbery. Michelle and Sharon were seen as beautiful, fashionable names at one time.

Report
Putitonthelist · 25/10/2013 20:57

Sophie is a popular name because it's so lovely.

I think it's dropped out of the top 5 now and like another poster said I know more children called Sophia these days

To say it will be the new Michelle or Sharon is pure snobbery Hmm

op, I think you know the answer to this one - yes you know there are a lorra Sophies around (despite you saying you haven't met any), but you clearly love the name, judging by all your reply posts and wanting people to like it so much. Sophie is clearly the name you want to use. It's a no-brainer I think :)

Congrats and enjoy :)
