McKynleigh is how my cousin has decided to spell her babies name.. I'm I the only one who sees this as odd?

Why? why? WHY?

Every name was made up at some point.

perhaps your cousin is joking? and the baby is named Molly/John
Is MCKYNLEIGH a boy or a girl?

it's only a name though I suppose. Wendy was a made up name not that long ago

Badtime, of course people have a right to an opinion - I stated quite clearly in my post that the name wasn't to my taste, and I am generally very happy to share my thoughts. However, given that there can't be too many McKynleighs about, I feel that it is a very personal attack on the individuals involved, and it would be very easy for her cousin/niece to find this thread if she ever googles the name in the future. I just feel it's a very unnecessary post for the op to make (particularly about a family member) as she knew what the response was likely to be from the mumsnet audience. I personally don't like the idea of actively upsetting anyone regarding something so personal, but clearly the op has little regard for her cousin's feelings.

Onyabike, if one takes your view to its logical conclusion, nobody has a right to have an opinion about anything anyone else does. That is an absurd position. However, you have a perfect right to feel that way, just as everyone has a right to have a view on the name 'McKynleigh'.

I am sure that the people posting on this thread would not walk up to OP's cousin and say that the baby's name is horrible.

Whilst the names is in no way to my taste, I feel very sad that many on this thread are being so horrid about the op's cousin and her choice of name. It's frankly none of our business what she's called her precious baby, and I'm sure she'd be very hurt and upset if she came across this thread. Sad

It sounds like she liked the name but didn't know how to spell it and couldn't be asked to research spellings. Instead she's ended up with something that looks like my 4yo's attempt to write Dinosaur names.

Americans do this a lot - 'McKayla' is actually a reasonably common version of Michaela over there. I struggle with the idea of giving girls 'Mc-' or 'Mac-' names, as that means 'son of'.

I think it's horrible, and the OP has every right to see it as odd.

It's a bit odd, but I did see a "Makynli" (pronounced McKinley) on Toddlers and Tiaras. So it could be worse.

I'm glad it isn't your idea, OP.

Surname as first name for a girl, kre8iv spelling, random capitals, named after a telly programme... honestly it hits all the DEAR GOD NO buttons for me.

It's not actually unique, if you Google, this thread doesn't come up (yet) - McKynleigh Abraham is a singer who was 'one of the first contenders on the Glee project', so maybe that's where the mum got it from.

Oh God. Well no it's not odd at all if that is the kind of name you generally go for.

I struggle with 'Mc' names tbh but it isn't my baby, nor is it yours.

So I'd get this deleted iiwy to avoid offending her.

Did you really start a thread to mock your cousin?

I agree with poster above - your poor cousin. I really hope she doesn't see this thread. Get it deleted ASAP.

It sounds like an American detective programme. Grin

Probably best you ask HQ to remove this thread. It's very identifying.

McKinley High is named after US president William McKinley who was shot dead at the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo. Wonder if your cousin knows that.
