We've chosen Leo for a boy.

Up until 2 years ago i worked in a primary school and was very in touch with which names were being chosen allot/which names were unusual. Now i'm all out of touch! Help.

We've still got 6 months - but just cannot seem agree on a girls name

I think it's lovely, there's one at my sons baby group, she's so pretty & it really suits her. Her twin sister is Heidi.

Isn't it interesting how it seems to be so common (as in popular) in some areas and unheard of in others. I'm in rural midlands and i've never met any Darcy's as children or adults - yet .....

.... showofhands and usual i agree with both of you. There is judgment about names, and there shouldn't be. It has to be thought about though, to some extent. Maybe?

The thing is if i was utterly devoted to a name then i wouldn't care a jot about what people thought about the name. My youngest DD is Daisy. I have 2 older DDs who's names i love, but all along i wanted 'Daisy'. You hear the name more now, but not so much back then (she's 15). It was considered unusual and a bit ponsy. I was quite young when i had my first 3 and didn't pluck up the courage to push for my favorite name till that no.3! :) I did get a few snidey comments, but i never cared. Like you showofhands. I'm so glad now that i went for it. DD has had lots of lovely comments on her name. And she suits it.

I'm not dead set on Darcy. I really don't know. Francesca - oh i just cant picture me standing there saying it ....... to family, and then school, etc, y'know? arrgghh.

I think we better hope it's a boy! The only general consensus of opinion from MN, me and DH is that Leo is nice, lol.

Leoni is ok, but it doesn't grab me.

Had to laugh at bluestars: then I saw Darcey Bussel on Strictly and she annoyed me so much with her "yah" that I had to scratch it. i know! Her dancing is fabulous, but there is something about her that makes my teeth itch :)

I think i might talk to DH about Tabitha again. But if i remember rightly it was quite a strong no to that one from him.

The obstetrician for my twins was called Darcie, and she certainly wasn't a chav.
I actually find Francesca a but of a chav name because some of my family live in Liverpool, and it is a very popular name amongst those that find gyspy wedding a source of fashion inspiration.

People don't tend to look down on 'posh ' names though.

So maybe it's not such a bad thing to be considered posh.

Like I said usual, it IS ridiculous but these sorts of associations are why people ask questions on baby names in the first place. It shouldn't matter and if you like a name, you should always use it.

I have overhead people call my ds's name 'posh' more than once. In fact, my own aunt said it was 'pretentious' and I overheard the neighbours mutter and sneer about his name being 'stuck up' when they first heard it. It doesn't matter a jot to me but I'm not naïve enough to believe that people don't hear all sorts of things attached to names.

And everybody lives in a place where people make sweeping generalisations. Not all people will have the same associations but we're all just humans and we tend to make connections. It's actually a very healthy thing to do. It only tips over into unhealthy if you blindly follow the unbidden associations. Of course people will hear the sibset 'Lucinda, Cressida and Ptolemy' and make certain leaps. Same as people will with 'Bluebell, Peace and Rainbow'. Or 'Jaiden, Kaycee and Chardonnay'. I couldn't tell you a single thing about any of those fictional children in reality, but I can tell you things about what the groupings suggest, no more, no less.

I don't know if you or your husband are Italian but I think of Francessca as a name for an Italian girl. It's very classy and beautiful in my opinion.

I like Tabitha also.

Darcey is very popular round my way - I like it but I think Francesca or Tabitha would wear better. I LOVE Tabitha but DH wouldn't have it

I don't like it really but more because I don't like unisex, surname type names. I think round here it tends to be associated with a certain socioeconomic status. There are a few I know of and their siblings are Tyler (a girl), Harvey and Jayden. It's a name of a certain ilk where I live and it's the opposite of poncey.

Of course it doesn't matter a jot and dismissing a name through straightforward or inverse snobbery is ridiculous but I know it's something people consider when choosing a name.

Tabitha and Francesca are lovely.
