A sister for Reuben James

... so on my like list are the completely unusable Robin (you can't have a Robin and a Reuben, right?) and Rowan, (ditto). Also we like Willow but so does Everyone Else Having Girls right now, ditto Scarlett. Quite like Harriet but it's a slightly odd colour (am synaesthetic). So not too complicated or stupid at all really...

Autumn is lovely; is it right for a May-born baby? I wouldn't have done it for that reason, but recognise I might be being slightly odd about that...

Scarlet does appear red, but 'red' itself doesn't, and neither does ruby. So it's about the shape of the word rather than its connotations though connotations do affect it in random and illogical ways.

I am open to cheeky pms, going into actual labour notwithstanding (am due Today!). Disclaimer - every synaesthete has their own unique set of associations - so the next one along will not have the same associations...

Synaesthesia is where you experience the sensation of one thing in response to a different kind of stimulus. So my synaesthesia is that everything conceptual has a colour. Words, people, places, times, letters and especially numbers - number/colour synaesthesia is the most common kind iirc. For me, thinking itself is coloured; numbers are strongest probably because they are the most stable kinds of concepts. People are coloured, but only when I think about them rather than when they are present. Days and weeks etc. ditto - when I think about them, they have a colour and sometimes a spatial dimension. It's not that I SEE the colour, rather I experience it on a physical level, which I recognise is a strange way to describe what colour is but I think it's probably to do with my particular synaesthesia that colour is more strongly a feeling than it is a visual thing. Some synasthetes 'see' the colour; some have totally different input/ responses - eg. seeing music, tasting sounds, hearing colours.

Synaesthesia is thought to occur when neighbouring brain regions share processing; this would suggest that I process colour in an undifferentiated way rather than discretely in a differentiated part of the brain. The ability to process one set of things in the terms of another is part of how we are capable of abstract thought and language so synaethesia is probably a variation on this basic capacity.

I think Autumn is a lovely name, I like Eleanor and Kate too.

I think this is a really fascinating thread, and am dying to ask what colour my boys names are, could I very cheekily pm you their names?

You could have Constance as a full name, and use Coco as a nickname, I thought about this for dd, but got talked out of it.

What about Elsa, Phoebe, Christabel or Anneliese?

I don't know the Woody Guthrie song but I did start singing the Kenny Rogers song and now it's stuck in my head.

Thank you Sparkly, you see my son's names as lovely colours. It's interesting to me as the colours you see do almost reflect aspects of their personalities.

Two weeks to go! How exciting. Hope all goes really well for you. I had two names ready for my twins, we discussed them again during labour, yep, all set. But then, when we saw them it all changed. We stuck with one, but plucked a new one out of the air for the elder one. I think a short list of five is good at this stage. Then over the next few weeks you can mentally try them out.

Hmmm ok then, maybe to work on ideas to go with Coco as a middle name?

Naomi Coco is quite sweet
Or how about....

Caitlin Coco
Sara Coco
Cara Coco
Sorrel Coco

That's hard...I don't think many names go well with coco, but that's just personal opinion...

Okay, sorry to have dallied, everyone, DM was in town and baby's gender is a secret so felt unable even sneakily to reply...

Re: Reuben is ruby coloured - well, no actually, and neither is Ruby as a matter of synaesthetic oddness fact, and while it is a nice colour, it's a bit like a Stroop test, so I'd not consider Ruby.

Colours on randomly discussed boys' names Wink:

Toby - Navy blue and brown, it's very dense and would be a contender for Reuben's brother if we had to think of one
Jake - Yellow and pale blue
Milo - green with brown underlining/ undershadowing, with a bit of white, it's actually quite complex and was nearly Reuben's name
Finn - rusty orange
Charlie - pale blue
Oliver - white, black with red at the end

All quite nice really! and I feel relieved about that, there are some lovely names which are all the wrong colour, like Michael, which is brown, black, orange and dirty. Mike is mainly dirty. Sorry if it's anyone's DH/ DC name, I can only reiterate, the next synaesthete along will tell you it's made of diamond and blue, or something...

Vashti is out, don't like v words, they are too pointy (sorry, that's the possibly least useful reasoning ever given) Sophie, Georgia, Daisy, Isabella, Corinna and Tamsin have been bagged by friends. Love Aurora, DP has vetoed - quite like Natalie but have taught a million and probably wouldn't use it for that reason. Same with Lauren, though it is particularly pleasingly coloured. Anna is great; Sally I'd forgotten existed! IYSWIM. Naomi is def creeping up on me, I already thought it was quite nice... Miranda Jane is just brilliantly put together, in terms of colours - emerald green and a brilliant, dazzling yellow but really solid. Might try it out on DP, not sure whether it's purely the colours that feel very appropriate...

Love, love love Sorrell Rose despite an odd colour thing, also Reuben announced the baby should be called Rosie Park, so it would be nice to give her one of his names. His current fave is Coco, though, and we were seriously thinking she should have Coco as a middle name/ nn and a more 'high court judge' (in the words of my friend) first name... Elodie May is lovely too, and more harmoniously coloured.

Didn't know the Woody Guthrie ref! Harriet and Thea are both lovely - Harriet could also be Hatty, which is tres chic.

Well, we've got two weeks or so before she gets here? Having said that, we didn't get to the registrar until Reuben was 3mo Blush so I'd be lying if was to suggest there was any sense of real pressure with that deadline...
