the female singer of The XX is called Romy

It would make a nice nn for Rosaline/Rosalind?

Tbh I think people would always think it was short for something, if used on its own. Lovely for a little girl but she might want something a bit more substantial for when she picks up her Nobel prize, iyswim.

I know 2 with the name pronounced as Row-me, but they both spell it Roumi - one is adult, the other 10, & know of another DD - pretty name though, but I prefer the spelling they use, less likely to get mispronounced as Rommie -

I also know a Rohey, pronounced Raw hie - which I also think is pretty & even less common, so I prefer it

I have a Romy she is actually a Romilly but we have always called her Romy. We pronounce it Rom-ee. I love Romy Schneider have you seen the Sisi movies. I know another one and have been told there are another couple about locally.

Oh, a google of Romy Schneider suggests it's a derivative of Rosemary

Even better

I went to school with a Roamy. Pronounced same.
Lovely name.

How about Romanie? I wanted that name for my DD but DH said no :-(

It's a lovely name. Romy Schneider is beautiful and there are not many people who you can genuinely use that word to describe. So, nice association - at least aesthetically, speaking.

However... I suspect you're on the cusp of a zeitgeist. I've seen it mentioned a few times around and about. It may be unusual-ish now, but I think others will start to latch onto it as well.

My first thought was the film too.

I'd never heard it before, so it sounds made up to me. Will it bother you if people assume/ask if it's made up?

and Michelle

Love that film. Business womens lunch...because we are business women.

If you like it go for it. Prefer Romilly.

Nice name, and still fairly uncommon. 1st connotations - Romy and Michelle's.... film, and obviously the word 'roam' as in to travel, lol. Does it flow with surname? If you love it, why worry what anyone else thinks? It's your baby and your choice. xx

Cute! There shouldn't be too many problems with pronunciation...

Love it, it was on my list for DC3 but he was a boy! Thought Callan would suit him more!

Romiley is and always will be a totally unremarkable suburb of Manchester to me. It would be like calling a child "Catford" or "Bootle".

Don't like it, sorry - but hate Romilly so it's better than that!

Report
BornToFolk · 10/01/2013 17:07

I don't like it, sorry. It's a bit meh for my tastes, sounds very much as though it should be short for something more substantial, if you know what I mean.
