What do people think of Sacha for a boy? Both our DDs have English name popular in Eastern Europe so I like how this fits.

Love it too and it relates to the Alexander vs Arthur baby name thread....Yes, wish we'd used it as a diminutive for our DS!

I love it! I would personally go with Sacha though. I think it looks more like a boy's name - not sure why!

I LOVE it.

Was on our list.

I like it and still associate it more with a boys name, although it seems to be increasingly used for girls. I'd spell it Sasha for either gender in UK.

I think it's a bit feminine but probably because I know 2 female Sashas. I prefer Xander or Alex as a nn for Alexander.

Lovely name. I know a German Sascha - think that's his name (i.e. not short for anything).

In fact Sacha reminds Sacher Torte, an Austrian cake!

Sasha is lovely and a great nickname for Alexander.

Agree about the 'ch' spelling being french and in english speaking countries 'sh' is more intuitive. Everyone will know how to pronounce Sasha.

I have just seen all the recent replies. I am so pleased by all the positive reactions. I clearly need to consider the spelling of Sasha/Sacha further though.

I wouldn't spell it Sacha unless you were French. Sasha is easier to read/pronounce (as some might read ch as in cheese, in English Grin).

I think of Sasha as a boys' name. Love it, actually.

Agree that the French spell it Sacha.

Interesting that it is only a boys' name in Germany (spellt Sascha).

I have always loved this name (ever since having a Sasha doll in the 1970s) but was veto'd for giving it to any of my DCs. I think its elegant, for either gender.

I like it. I know both male and female Sasha/Sacha's.

I'd personally use Sacha for a boy, undecided which I'd use for a girl!

The only Eastern European Alexandra I know doesn't go to any variation of Sasha though- she's an Ola.

I love it. Only reason it wasn't on my list is that it would sound awful with my surname. But, the only Sasha I've met in RL was AlexandRA, sorry!

Sasha is a unisex given name. It originated in countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe as a diminutive of Aleksander and Aleksandra. It is also found as a surname, although this is very rare. Alternative spellings include: Саша (Russian, Serbian), Сашо (Bulgarian), Саше (Macedonian), Sa?a (Slovenian, Serbian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian), Sasza (Polish), Сашко (Ukrainian), Sascha (German), Sasja (Dutch and Swedish), and Sacha (French).

This name is especially common in Europe where it is used primarily by males as a diminutive of Alexander.

In Germany, the civil registry offices allow the inscription of Sascha in birth certificates as a formal name but only for boys

"Spellings deffo Sacha = boy, Sasha = girl "

NO! Sacha is the French version (as the french pronounce ch as in chat as we do sh). The German version is Sascha.

In the UK I'd use Sasha. Great name and lovely nickname for Alexander!

It is a boys' name and I find using on a girl like calling a girl Roger.

The spelling thing is nothing to do with gender and more to do with where the name is from. Sacha is French, Sascha is German etc. I know it's used for girls now too but I still can't fathom it as a girls' name. I will though over time as more people use it for girls. I have a Russian friend who could not believe we use it for girls here.

I love it though. Would have been my choice for ds if it was my sole choice to make.

It's quite nice, but I definitely see it as a girls name, even though I know a boy Sasha.

It's one of my favourite names. I love both spellings (Sacha, Sasha) but see Sacha for a boy and Sasha for a girl.

Love it. It's DH's cousin's name (I think his mum was Czech), and funnily enough, also his wife's name! Also, I think with more Eastern European families settling in the UK, it'll become much more recognised as a boy name.

I probably see it as feminine because I had a next door neighbour who was a Sasha, short for Alexandra.

Report
BubaMarra · 05/01/2013 16:10

In Russia and Eastern Europe Sasha is short for Alexander. Short for Alexandra (female) would be some variant of Sasha, depending on the country. Sashka, for example. Although it wouldn't be strange to call a girl Sasha. Not usual, but not strange either.
