Baby names

Angus?

Need your thoughts MN...
After lots of back and forth, DH and I both like Angus for a boy.
We are in Scotland, don't know any other babies called Angus and wouldn't use nn Gus (only grown ups called Angus I know are Angus or Angaidh - like an-geh with a hard g).
Need advice as hormones are running riot :)

Like Fergus, Geranium, but Raphael wouldn't work with my surname! Thanks though

angus is lovely and so is fergus and raphael!

I quite like Angy/Angaidh as a nn! Not against Gus either, but it's less good with the surname and just wouldn't actively use it a lot.

Glad to hear of so many lovely little Anguses, I think might be 'the one'!

Our ds2 is Angus too, it's a great name. We call him An-gee at home too
Don't know any other 3yr olds called Angus (yet)

I have an Angus. We have avoided Gus as a name, but the DSs have invented An-gee.

It's a great name. Watch out for it on spell check though Grin and on the continent people have never heard of it and don't know how to pronounce it. That may or may not be relevant to you.

My parents are in Scotland. If the DCs had lived in that village there would have been at least one other Angus in the class; here in London he has always been the only one in his school.

That is weird manic! I'd be fine with there being a few at possible-DS's school here in Scotland, but might be a bit put out if I was in the South East of England, you'd expect it to be more unusual!

It's weird, we have 3 Anguses in Y5 and another 2 in Y4 plus one of my friends has a 1 year old Angus - and we live in the South East of England!

I know it's not a popular name so must be a freak coincidence.

It's a nice name though, I like it.

of a similar age even.....obviously has a similar name Blush

my DS (21months) is an Angus so I obviously think its a fantastic name Grin we know one other Angus of a similar name....and yes we live in Scotland!
I'm also an AC/DC fan, not that he's named after Angus Young, but I don't mind the connection!
We sometimes call him An-gee at home but never Gus, although I wouldn't mind if he wanted to be called Gus. We've been complimented on his strong, traditional name but I know not everyone likes it. He was meant to be a Ruaridh but didn't suit him when he was born, Angus wasn't even on the original shortlist!

baskingseals Gabriel is beautiful (and Gabe!) although I obviously prefer what you chose in the end! Can understand that though we are having a nightmare choosing!

cockadoodledooo turbo Scottish and Irish here, another good thing is that Angus works in Ireland too (someone mentioned the Irish variant upthread) :)

I know one (teen) and he's ace. Got to agree there needs to be a Scottish connection though or it is a bit odd imo.

i have an Angus. tbh his name was a compromise. i was desperate to call him Gabriel. still have name envy when i meet a Gabriel. he is known as Gus. it has grown on me, but i never imagined i would have a son called Angus.

I know a baby Angus. He has Scottish heritage. It goes well with his sister's name.

I wouldn't choose it myself, but I quite like it - classic proper name but not overused.

Don't like Fergus so much because of name association with someone else.

ceeveebee · 07/12/2012 21:50

I love it, it was on our list but we thought it was maybe a bit too Scottish for us southerners!

AC/DC live is on BBC4 as I type.

Fabulous name!

Love it. May be a little biased as DS2 is Angus. He rocks. Gets An-gee as a nn
