i think dh and have finally narrowed it down to one of these ( it has been exhausting to say the least) even dd agrees and I thought we would never get there!
Baby will have dh's surname; same as Sherlock!

On the Continent there seem to be more male Sasha/Sascha/Sachas than female but in the US the name seems to become more popular amongst girls.

I think Saskia is a much nicer alternative - sounds great in all languages (I know Smile too.

I thought Sasha was unisex. Like Tomverlane says it's Russian for Alexander/Alexandra. I love Anneliese though. Don't like Jade at all. Agree it sounds a bit 'downmarket'.

Jade is ick - sorry.

Sasha to me is a Russian boys' name, but maybe I'm weird. I suppose it could be a girl and so many names these days are unisex or girls with boys names that it really doesn't matter as long as you like it.

Sasha Annalise :)

Sasha is short for Aleksander or Aleksandra, it's not exclusively a boy's name at all. As for in some other countries, it'd be along the lines of hearing a girl named Jamie/Toni or a guy named Casey. NOT in the realm of "A boy named Sue" :)

Maybe she'll simply cease to exist when you cross the border? They might just give you some funny looks as it'd be like having a girl named Trevor to them but I agree, in North America you'd have no trouble.

Lol at "not allowed to use it for a girl in Germany" that is so funny! We regularly transfer in Frankfurt - do you think they will ban dd2, if she is a girl?

I guess we need to decide what spellings we need to go with - both Sasha ( for a girl) and Annalise are common spellings in North America and average 300 - 400th in popularity on the baby names list for the past few years. Oh well, I have a few more weeks before we need to make a decision!

Novack, different spellings just means different origin. Sacha is the French version, Sasza is Polish, Sascha is German, Sasha is Russian etc etc. In fact in Germany you're not allowed to use it for a girl.

Anneliese is an old german name, itself a combination of Anne (pronounced Ann-eh) and Liese (pronounced Lee-seh).

LemonTurd · 02/05/2012 04:59

Is Annelies an alternate spelling, or a different name? I seem to remember that was Anne Frank's real name.

Sacha is a boys name as in Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat aka Ali G note ch nt

Sasha was the name of a cool DJ but I'm sure he was a boy too.

Thanks for the feedback!
Natasha won't work - I know too may of them - and they are mostly nn'd Tash. I didn't know Sasha Obama was Natasha, I wonder if it has spiked in popularity.
I haven't lived in the UK for a while, it so interesting how popular culture influences a name - I still like Jade, but it may not work if we move permanently to the UK.
I need to do some more research on Annalise, that is how all the Annalise's I know spell it, but it looks like it must be a North American spelling. We plan to spend several years in Asia before dc is 10, but don't think we will ever move to mainland Europe.
I don't remember it being so hard to name
! Cheers!

I love Annalise and it would be on my shortlist if it wasn't the name of possibly the most beautiful woman I know. Everyone would assume I gave a girl the name after her and I was expecting her to be a stunner!

I don't like Jade. As other people have said, it has quite negative connotations (old term for prostitute, now seen as a bit of a 'common' name). Jade Jagger might be a bit old-school but my generation would immediately think Jade Goody.

I only know girls named Sasha and think it's a very pretty name. I really like Anneliese too - but please spell it right Blush.

Obama - can't type!

Barack Obamas uses Sasha as the nickname for his daughter Natasha. Natasha is clearly feminine so would avoid the problems abroad. What do you think?

alwaystheblacksheep · 01/05/2012 21:09

I like Sasha for a girl although I know it is considered by some as a boy's name. Sasha Annaleise.

ShowOfHands · 01/05/2012 21:05

If I had chosen, ds would have been Sacha.

It will always be a boys name to me. I still do a double take when people suggest it for girls.

Sasha is on my short list for girls, I think it's lovely. And it's so feminine sounding! I know it is technically boy or girl appropriate but I think it's very girly.

Jade Jagger was born in 1971. I suspect that most people today associate the name with Jade Goody, though, hence the comments about it going downmarket.

Lol pg brain has actually made me type analyze, not Anna-lease. It's been a long day! Or I could blame it on the iPad and auto correct.!

How old is Jade Jagger? That says a lot about a name if people still associate it with a person 30 some years later! I knew a Jade a few years ago and she was lovely.

I put a post up about Sasha a week or so ago, and most people said Sacha is traditionally a boys name, but is becoming more common for a girl.

Still thinking....

i thought Sasha could be either a boys or girls name- in Russian it is an abbreviation/diminutive for either Alexander or Alexandra - i have to say I prefer the longer versions.
I thought it was Anna-Lease pronunciation wise
