Baby names

baby name wobble with 3 weeks to go

daisybear · 25/06/2011 10:08

I have posted before and now just wanting some fresh opinions before my little girl arrives in 3 weeks time.

Me and hub have 3 names on the top of our list. Trouble is i find i'm always on the look out for something better, its like nothing is perfect enough for my baby girl. Has anyone else felt like this or am i just hormonal and mad...lol.

so our names are as follows:

Laila - the name we've always loved and said would be our little girls name - but sinse becoming pregnant i'm worried its become a little common popular. i hate it spelt layla and if i spell it laila will she have a lifetime of correcting people.

Florence - my hubs fave. i love it too but after IVF and fertility websites i am familiar with the term AF so Flo as a nn would be a no no and Florrie is ok but still not great.

Eliza - My fave. The only thing is that hubby's signifiant ex was Liz (elizabeth) so i wouldn't want Liz as a nn and would it be weird of me to use it if its a derivative of my hubby's ex's name....

names that have been vetoed by dh are beatrice, harriet (hattie) and eleanor and lots of others..lol. He likes sadie and lexie but i've vetoed them.

any opinions or fresh suggestions would be great

thanks

at hub and hubs

Awww.

Nothing is perfect enough for your baby girl?

Make one up then, that has meaning, gravitas and beauty.

Like Labinia, or some such other bollocks.

And welcome to PFBitis btw. Terrible affliction but should wear off in around 3 years time or if you have another baby. Whichever comes first.

Hi daisybear.

Smile

Why the angst?

Confused

You do know you and your hub have got 6 weeks after the lo is born to make a decision don't you?

FWIW I prefer Florence, but to set your mind at rest, the 2 Elizas I have known have never been shortened to Liz or Lizzie.

Lol.

Smile

I've never met an Eliza shortened to Liz.

And a nn for Florence - what about Flossie? I know one -I think this used to be a common nn, but not used so much now.

Yes, Lilah is Lie-lah. To me, anyway. :)

Lilah is Lie-Lah as far as I know.

Eliza (presuming you are going E-lie-zah not E-lee-zah) is lovely, and because there's no 'liz' sound in it I think you'd be unlikely to get Liz as a nn.

I changed DD's name (amidst much wailing and gnashing of teeth), and I really think if you love Eliza you should go for it, if you don't you might find any other name feels second best.

Thanks for all your opinions

i'm still trying to work on hub for Hattie but i doubt he'll change his mind Sad

cheerful is lilah pronounced Lie-lah or lee-lah?? i like Lie-lah (i know can be spelt as lyla but i don't like the spelling) but i dislike lee-lah - which is also a reason i'd spell Laila with an A rather than Leila with an E...iyswim.

Eliza is my favourite.

I think Laila is very pretty BUT. Here in American it's either used by hippy-types (because of the song) or as a Shayla/Haylee/Baileigh alternative. So I have bad associations although it has a gorgeous sound. I love Lilah, though. :)

I think Hattie as a nn for Henrietta/Harriet is sweet. I don't like Florence b/c of the nn and don't like Lexi, though Alexandra is pretty IMO.

I think Eliza is my favorite of your list, though I completely understand what you mean. I love the name James and it's DH's dad, but I once dated a horrid James and now that's all I think of. You could call her Izzi though, which is cute.

Good luck and congrats on your DD!

I think you and DD woudl have to get used to people writing Layla. I love Eliza and Florence. Have you thought of Hettie? ( I know one who is very sweet!)
If Laila is your top name then go for it.

Definitely Eliza.( Don't go with Sadie or Lexie-both horrid).

I'm expecting twins very soon and I'm probably going to call the girl Lara. It's a bit like Laila so you might like it. I am willing to share........ as long as you don't live in Warwickshire!Grin

"Laila - the name we've always loved and said would be our little girls name"

Then go for it. Everything else will always be second best IMO.

Lovely name, don;t think Layla is all that common anyway is it so don't think the spelling would be a huge issue?

Btw, the name I loved for DD1 but DH vetoed is now our DD2's name, so keep working on him Wink

Isla is a gorgeous name, unusual and not at all weird if you know what I mean

Report
chillistars · 25/06/2011 13:29

Florence is alright, though I'd always think of the Magic Roundabout. Plus if she has sisters - Aunt Flo!
Or Florrie, from the Archers - I think!

Report
chillistars · 25/06/2011 13:27

though wasn't Laila the name of the first dog in space..lol!

Report
chillistars · 25/06/2011 13:27

I like Laila, and we don't have any at work so it's not a common name IME.

Lol @ doris.....maybe when she's a teenager i could pretend i love the name Liz and then she won't use it....Wink

thanks for the opinions

i'm very jelous of all those of you with Hatties...i just love love it. Are they Hatties or Harriets with nn Hattie??
i've tried everything to change dh's mind but he's having non of it. even my grandad was Harry and it could be a tribute but he's till not having it. i'll keep trying though...

I was swaying towards Laila and Eliza rather than Florence before i posted and it seems most of you agree too. i think Florence as a middle name as i still love it but the nn's aren't great.

glad no one thinks its a problem having an Eliza if dh's ex is Liz... i wouldn't want her thinking we were weird and named our daughter after her..lol. i think i just get paranoid....hormones??

nicolamumof 3 i'm glad i'm not the only one having a name wobble. i love your choice of Isla...beautiful. good luck in 3 weeks and lets hope our LO's don't keep us waiting Smile

I had Florence beatrice and harriet on our shortlist for dd3.

We have a Lydia nn lydie (and Lula Blush)

I love Eliza too but she is quite likely to become a Liz (or Lizzie) (particularly if she's a teenager and knows you don't like it Grin)
