My DH (forces) invited his superior over for dinner and I didn't have a clue what to cook so plumped for my speciality - toad in the hole.

Am now worried that he thinks we are plebs

I have a good repertoire of meals that I can turn out easily and thought about going for more 'posh' meals but you know what I thought stuff it. He seemed to enjoy it & in fact wanted to stay here instead of going out on the preplanned night out.

A lighthearted AIBU. But I was so worried.... why

I made Yorkshire puds yesterday and they were a disgrace. DP (who has cooked one meal for me in all the time we've been together, and probably in his lifetime) informed me that I should have put the tin in to heat up and put them on the top shelf too so no wonder they looked like brown rocks. Needless to say his interference underwhelmed me. I wish I'd consulted this thread

a smidgeon in my eyes is probably about a tablespoon.

Really, salt grinders & gravy boats are common??!

See thats the whole, toilet & lavatory debate isn't it? I thought gravy boats were infinitely preferable to being served out of a mug with a picture of a cat on front

Am loving the Elizabeth David way - may give that a bash too - to see if they go even bigger! Also, the smoked bacon tip - may try that too! DH says why improve on perfection (ah, bless him)

How much is a smidgeon of boiling water? Are we talking a splash (like a tablespoon) or more or less? And do you add it to the batter just before you pour it over the sossies?

The poor man was probably over the moon with gratitude that you hadn't fallen into the 'Oh he lives in Belgravia so we had better give him some posh nosh' trap of serving up minuscule portions of over priced, over seasoned, under flavoured weird stuff ... Toad in the hole rocks!

Here's a posh twist: individual toad in the holes.

Get a 4-hole muffin baking tin, pour the batter mixture in each hole, chuck in some pre-grilled chipolatas which have been cut into 3 (they will then fit nicely into a muffin hole), and bake.

Looks sooo cute when popped out on the plate! We have two each if we're feeling greedy and they are super filling. Serve with mash with celeriac and onion gravy. Is totally yummy.

Another tip for super crispy Yorkshires: add a good dash of ale into the mixture. I use Boddingtons. Works a treat.

wrap bacon/smoked ham around the sausages and put mustard in the batter for extra spice

lmao @ 'spotted richard'

peasandbeans- yeah, it always sizzles when I pour the batter in. I think I'm just cursed when it comes to yorkshire pud .

I love Toad in the Hole, it's a fab meal.

Only to be improved with Nigel Slater's onion gravy.

I do Yorkshires from a recipe by Elizabeth David which is the basic recipe back to front. You whisk the eggs and milk together with seasoning, wait 15 mins then whisk in the flour and bung in the oven.

The yorkshire rises so much, one of the sausages fell over the side of the tin last time I did it.

Everyone loves toad in the hole!!!!

I used to work for a high(ish) profile posh Irish family, his favourite meal - shepards pie - loved it, was always out eating fancy meals buyt whenever at home, thats what he wanted - good proper food!

Now if anyone wants a good jam roly poly recipe, you cant go wrong with Jamie - delicious and not too heavy.

sweetnitanitro: have you tried making sure the tin is REALLY hot before you pour the batter in? and the oven too? (you can always turn the oven down later, but if its not hot enough to start with you will definittely get roast pancake)

posh folk love this kind of food, witness all those rich folk stampeding over each other to get to one of Jeffrey Archer's famous shepherd's pie and champagne parties (in his pre jailbird days that is!)

You've now got me craving toad in the hole big time

Honestly, you ought to have made roast guinea fowl or something and provided a solid gold gravy boat.

I'm jealous, my yorkshire pud never ever rises, I just end up with roast pancake I've tried everything!

Nooo....with mash and peas and onion gravy surely?

I find the best sausages to use are Cumberland chipolatas as you can get loads in the dish and they stick out all over the place like wot they shud. Best from a ruddy cheeked Lancashire butchers, but equally good from Tesco's Finest range.

Always grease your dish before inserting mixture - I forget EVERY SINGLE TIME, which prompts a selection of industrial phrases from DP who has to sandblast it clean

Always always always served with some leaves and Branston Pickle.

Will have reminded him of the food at his boarding school when he was a boy.

He will be happy happy happy

I think the OP is just boasting at her brilliant idea of Toad in Hole. Perfect for a forces bloke. Or a public school bloke. Or really, any bloke at all.

6oz flour
125ml milk
3 eggs

whisk up into batter and add to best sausages you can get your mits on. Very hot oven ensures it rises well.

I had a grapefruit for tea.

It's also retro.

But not as comforting.
