AIBU?

To not understand caffiene drinkers

I had a cup of tea yesterday at 10am.
I was still having palpitations at midnight, and was wide awake. Didn't sleep until 1am.
Is it just me who is this crazy sensitive to caffiene? How do so many people chug coffee all day and not have any problems?

I'll never forget the time I had an energy drink at the library once when I was at uni, and had to go home shortly afterwards to lie down!

Back when I was nursing, I would have a can of redbull to keep me awake on the drive home after a night shift and I'd still get into bed and sleep.

I only drink 2 cups of coffee, if I fancy more, I have decaf. If I know I'll have glass of pepsi/coca-cola I watch my caffeine intake during the day. One day I had two coffees and two glasses of pepsi max and couldn't sleep all night. Sweet.

There are links between adult ADHD and caffeine not having an effect on you!

I find that caffeine has a wonderfully calming effect on me and helps me to concentrate on my work. Cutting down in pregnancy has been difficult and I still have a daily coffee at my most unproductive time to help me keep focused, but stay very much within the recommended limits. I've suspected for a little while that I have ADHD in some form (brain always buzzing and I always seem to have had to work much harder than those around me to have a life with minimal levels of order). So it's interesting to see this link.

Oh I definitely know I’ve built up a massive resistance but as another poster has touched on I feel like it’s related to my ADHD too. I don’t feel right without it. I’ve cut back massively on the energy drinks and drink much less Pepsi max than before.

I feel like my caffeine usage is justified by my lifestyle in essence. I work part time until the early hours, walk 20k steps a day at a minimum and train 4-6 times a week both cardio and weights.

(Am I waving at you or is that my hand shaking because I accidentally had a cup of tea last Sunday? 😂)

Most instant coffees give me palpitations, I'm guessing it's to do with the amount of caffeine. Most ground coffees are fine, but a few brands have the same effect as instant.
I used to love tea, but couldn't tolerate when I was pregnant, and haven't been able to drink it since.
Can't drink coffee after 2PM or I can't sleep (never used to be a problem in my youth!)
I get horrible caffeine withdrawal headaches. I don't drink more than three cups a day.
I like most herbal teas and so does DS (little toad nicked my advent calendar teas last year...I was tempted to pinch the chocolates from hisGrin).

I can drink a cup of tea in bed and go straight to sleep. I wish it affected me!

I had something like food poisoning from caffeine, the coffee where I worked was so strong. Never been able to touch it since.
Apparently it's not an allergy, just an extreme sensitivity.
On the good side I lost half a stone that evening!

Just reading about half life of caffeine as that is super surprising.

Its 5-6 hrs and completely cleared by 10hours. So that would be 8pm.

So I think you might have anxiety if your having heart palpitations at midnight.

Not a doctor but just a guess.

Could it be that you are very anxious about how caffeine affects the body and it's actually anxiety that is making you need a lie down/palpitations?

@KylieCharlene Yawn. This is gaslighting. Some people are physically sensitive to caffeine 🙄

You sound very sensitive to caffiene.

That said, I have to stop drinking coffee at midday and tea at 4 or I can't sleep.

I am realyl addicted to coffee and will feel unwell if I have dont have a cup in the morning, it's not ideal.

instant coffee has loads less caffiene in than ground based coffee. It's only slightly more than a cup of tea.

Some people are just more sensitive. I sometimes have some instant coffee in a hot chocolate just before bed and I fall asleep just fine. I don’t generally drink tea or coffee.

God I wish it did have that effect on me! I can drink a cup of tea at 10pm and fall asleep within half an hour 😅

I love taking a cup of tea to bed to drink while I'm reading!

But I drink bucketloads of the stuff and am probably immune.

IsAinmDummm · 05/10/2022 12:17

Caffeine doesn't affect me at all. I could have a cup of coffee before bed and still sleep all night.
YABU to say you don't understand Caffeine drinkers, that's like saying I don't understand people who eat carrots just because you don't like them - Everyone is different 🤷‍♀️

I've read research that says that nicotine binds to similar areas of the brain as caffiene, so smokers have a MUCH higher tolerance for coffee and tea than non-smokers.

When I quit smoking, all of a sudden I couldn't tolerate anything like the levels I would have previously.
Frequently it would be 10-12 cups of coffee a day.
Now it's maybe 4, although I do miss it if I don't have enough!

putitinthefuckitbucket · 05/10/2022 12:29

I have ADHD. Caffeine makes me calmer. Definitely doesn't keep me awake. I could drink espressos at midnight and still fall asleep.

It's fascinating how our brains are all so differently impacted by the same drug.

There is no level of sensitivity that can keep a human awake at midnight from one cup of tea at 10am. IT's not physically possible. It's psychosomatic.

But why the drama...just drink decaf.

Tea never affects me but if I have more than 2 mugs of coffee (Nespresso) I get horrific palpitations. So after my 1st coffee, I have decaff and limit myself to 3 a day then go onto earl grey tea.
