I’ve just been reading the other thread about the worst decisions people have made in their lives. I’m saddened to hear people’s stories and would like us to have a positive thread to go alongside it..

so what’s the best thing that’s happened to you, or the best decision you’ve made?

Deciding at 21 I wasn’t going to stay in the cult I was raised in.

Buying my house outright at the age of 25 with 2 children

Moving to where I live now. I didn’t have friends or a social life until I moved here (in my 40s) and now I do.

I have a few that I can’t easily separate, as they’ve all had a huge impact on my life.

Having DS1, even though his father wasn’t sure.

Marrying DH.

Fostering, which led to the adoption of our two children.

All the animals we’ve adopted, and in particular, the last one.

Joint replacement surgery.

My decision to embrace adventure.

Having my DD, getting married, going travelling. Going to New York

Getting a beautiful, new build, well insulated HA house with a heat pump - and a lifetime tenancy. It illustrates perfectly the combination of luck and initiative to make things happen- incredible luck that they should be building more HA properties with local needs restrictions in my village, but I also found out about them through talking to people, made sure my details were updated on the Homechoice register, bid as soon as I could. Even so, I didn't initially "win", but the person who did dropped out for some reason.

Being securely- and warmly- housed has transformed our lives. Everyone should have this opportunity.

Mine would be my kids, obviously, the light of my life!
Also am thankful for my nature - MH wasn't always great, but am so positive now 99% of the time, & it makes SO much difference to be able to bounce back. Cracking on & getting ON with life.
My faith - not really a churchgoer but thank God every day for my many blessings.
Our little garden - grass, flowers, birds, squirrels & hedgehogs. My fluffy slipper boots & dressing gown. Telly. Am on my own at night & curling up on the sofa & being entertained is awesome!
Don't need a lottery win, am very content! :-)

My son he completely changed me as a person and he's just the best.

Going to a toddler group, on my own, as a huge introvert. The chain of events that set off has been incredible. It was 20 years ago and I'm still reaping the benefits.

Because I was so introverted, I volunteered to help with making tea, tidying toys etc to give me something to do. I became good friends with the organiser (who was the opposite of introverted) who opened up a whole new social circle for me and DS.

Once DC were at school, we remained friends and she became depressed about her weight. To try and help we started doing a bit of jogging. Did Race for Life then joined a running club. Since then my whole way of life has changed and I have a huge social circle of active people. I'm off to somewhere sunny to run a marathon with some of them this weekend.

Friend lost 3 stones and has kept it off. We're still friends, but I'm not so dependant on her now, which is good. I still have quiet tendencies but I'm fully involved in the local community these days and it all started there.

My horse

She costs me an absolute fortune and worries me so much but is worth every penny. She gives me so much joy and we have lots of fun together but she also keeps me sane. Going out to look after her during lockdown was a saviour, she's a reason to get up, a reason to go out and get fresh air and exercise when I have been cooped up working all day.

I don't know what I would do without her.

DH without a single doubt.

Makes me laugh so hard still, after 20 years. Never have I ever loved another human being like it (apart my children too of course ha!)

Got clean from heroin, crack and alcohol, got a flat, had my daughter, got my little dog, got a job, got an allotment. I used to dream of it. My dreams all came true.

Becoming a volunteer for a charity - I made an amazing group of friends and met my DH.

Family aside - taking the plunge and doing my MBA. Changed so much work-wise and learned loads.

Also probably taking a 'summer job' away from home when I was 20. Nearly 20 years later I still live here and while obviously I don't know how life would have panned out had I stayed where I grew up, I can't imagine I'd have had the same mind-broadening opportunities or met the same variety of people. Obviously wouldn't have met DH though.

Having dd.

I've raised her on my own and it's been v v hard at times but she's still my best achievement and the best thing I ever did was having her 🥰

Other than that deciding on doing my nurse training was a good decision, being a nurse has defined my life for the last 20 years. It's not an easy job but I do still have a passion for it and have made a lot of life long friends throughout my career.

Meeting my fiancé! Or rather reconnecting as we actually met and dated in high school.

He's just one of those sunshine people who exudes positive energy and lights up a room. He truly makes me a better person and has boosted my self esteem massively. I just love spending every day with him and can't wait to marry him in 3 months time!
