Pensions & benefits unlikely to receive inflation linked increase in 2023.

Treasury secretary Chris Philp has this morning announced that pensioners, and those in receipt of benefits, may well not receive the inflation linked increase we were assured of getting in April 2023. This is because having scrapped the higher level of personal taxation, they now have to impose austerity cuts elsewhere.

So not only have the Tories given thousands to the wealthy, they may actually also directly be taking money from the poorest in society.

The increase was meant to be around 10%. As benefit and pension rates are so low, this is desperately needed. Also, benefit rates in particular have been frozen for many years during the Tories 'reign', meaning cuts in real terms.

I am bed bound, and currently don't have enough to cover my bills and my care. Social services slashed my care budget several years ago, and now I receive £289 per month towards the 30 hours of care I need per week. I have been going without some days, which means I get dirty and sore due to my incontinence, and many days don't eat.

I didn't ask to be like this, and paid a fortune in tax when I was able to work. Why are the disabled expected to live in abject poverty? Do we not at least deserve a reasonable standard of living, and to be able to retain some dignity and quality of life?

I am absolutely fucking raging. I, and many others I know, will not be able to survive this.

Also, Richard Murphy is a much respected economist. He speaks in plain terms we can all understand, and here is his blog explaining what the Tories actions mean for us all. It is truly horrifying.

There's a lot of speculation and opinion in there rather than hard fact....

Pensioners and those on benefits are not going to get the inflation-linked rises that were expected next April, even though their financial positions are profoundly perilous.

This has not been announced.

Wouldn’t put it past this lot tbh.

True indeed @Shinyhappyperson22 but everything you read is such doom and gloom, I do wish writers would concentrate on fact.

The next statement in November will focus on how the books can be balanced to account for lowering taxes. Look for public services and benefit increases to be slashed, if Liz Truss lasts that long.
