Scotland or similar. Is Charlie going to want it? Don’t they all have their own estates?
I said this to a colleague who got really ANGRY as it’s ‘disrespectful’ after claiming only the Royals would have the money to upkeep the place. I said - turn it over to NTS or similar and give it back to the public.
she’s now not talking to me!
AIBU?
To say Balmoral could/should be National Trus

I was saying just the same thing today to a woman at work about your house. You should sign that over.

I was funded by the general public all my working life.
Pumperthepumper · 17/09/2022 15:05
That’s not even remotely the same thing though. Unless you’re also living an incredibly privileged life funded by the general public due to accident of birth.

I know this will have steam coming out of your ears but when I inherited my Scottish farm from my father I did not pay inheritance tax because agricultural land is exempt.

‘but if he had to give up much of his private wealth to become monarch, how would he pay inheritance tax?’
he hasn’t given up anything. He’s inherited more.

No, it’s private land isn’t it? Here’s a run down:
people.com/royals/all-of-king-charless-sprawling-estates-across-the-uk/
And the Dutchy estate covers a lot of land, not sure if that counts as private or not.
Discovereads · 17/09/2022 14:53
Most sources count the entirety of the U.K., and everywhere she was head of state (ie Canada, Australia). It’s stupid because the monarch doesn’t actually own all that land.
wonderstuff · 16/09/2022 18:06
Apparently our new King is the biggest landowner in the world - I'm guessing that is crown estates plus privately owned property. DH read it somewhere today, not seen the source info myself. But in any case I think it's highly unlikely that our new monach is going to start signing over privately owned estates to the National Trust. Doesn't seem to be his style.

UKs biggest private landowner. They can afford to run it and Sandringham plus the other houses e.g. Highgrove, Gatcombe Park. They do pay taxes but it's a bit grey. Article on this in The Guardian this week.
TightDiamondShoes · 16/09/2022 19:01
Lol @ KC3 being the world’s biggest landowner.
Good grief - is that really believed?
