I woke up in the middle of the night to a hot stingy pain that lasted a couple seconds in my leg. I must of fell back to sleep then I got up for work and looked at my leg and it's bruised with a red raised lump. It's been getting more painful and stingy as the day has gone on. Help!

What have I been bitten by?

Spider! I seem to hear about spider bites more and more often in the UK (I'm assuming you are in the uk). That's one hell of a bruise too next to it, did that come from the bite or something else?

@Adultchildofelderlyparents oh no! My worst nightmare I'm arachnophobic and I cry just looking at them 😩

The bruise wasn't there last night before I got into bed, I know because I moisturised my legs when I got out of the bath. So strange.

I share your fear! I think if it was wasp of midge or anything you'd have heard the buzzing noise so spider seems likely. Check your bedding very well tonight just in case it's still lurking in there.

A spider bite would have two puncture marks, not one.
I'm voting mozzie if you're in the southern half of the country.

I would say mosquito which you're having a slight allergic reaction to. Take some anti histamines.

Spider. They can get quite infected so keep it as clean as you can.

Oh OP I’m so sorry if it was a spider. My worst nightmare too. I check my covers before getting into bed every night. Hate this time of year.

I'm really allergic to mozzies and they swell like golf balls so it's not that.

There are two marks on the bite, I haven't photographed it very well.

Definitely a spider bite. That happened to DH a few years ago. It started as little bite and then just spread like a big wound. It dried up after a week or so but you can still see a faint scar on his leg. Keep an eye and if you get worried, definitely go to doctor.

Horsefly bites leave bruising and can swell up very badly. It’s more of a cut than a small puncture wound though

It sounds like a spider. I had one under my pillow a couple of weeks ago and it had my arm! I’m sure I took it by surprise rather than it deliberately seeking skin 😅 but got quite a bump from it!
