AIBU?

Calpol or Neurofen more effective for stinking cold in 9year old

My DD9 is full of a horrible cold. She is completely blocked and is stuggling to sleep. She is really suffering.
I think her sinus is blocked, she's complaining of a head ache too.
She's had calpol but is it worth trying neurofen for next dose? Was wondering if neurofen might be more effective as helps reduce swelling/inflamation?
Which do people find more effective?

And any other tips?
Tried a steamy bowl, honey lemon hot water (rejected!), Vicks, face massage... I'm on my own with her as DH away tending to sick elderly parents

Id alternate them, it wont do her any harm. When dd gets bad hayfever she has to sleep on the recliner as nothing else shifts it and at least that way she gets some rest. Can you raise her mattress at all as blocked noses are worse laying down.

I’d give both - 1 every 2 hrs so hopefully neither wears off. (Obviously sticking with maximum doses allowed in 24hrs.) Hope she feels better soon

I was told that in children too young for an actual decongestant (I think they’re from 12) piriton can be useful for drying up snot. Could also help her sleep.

With my dd, benelyn children’s night coughs was also always good as an alternative - not sure if yours has a cough though?

Wouldn’t have thought neurofen would do much for a cold tbh

Thanks everyone.
She got off to sleep eventually thankfully but today will try alternating.

I didnt know about the Otrivine drops - they sound really useful. I'll try to track some down tonight incase she's suffering badly again tonight.

My DH has suffered from chronic sinus infections since he was about her age and he insists that decongestant sprays etc make it all worse in his experience... but the otrivine drops for kids sound gentler

Use them both if she’s that bad. Won’t help clear her cold at all though, so I presume she has a headache/sore throat etc from it and that’s why you’re using it?

For future reference I was told paracetamol dries a runny nose. And it's what's in all the cold and flu meds.

That's good to know @MuggleMe

@Quincythequince I wondered if the ibuprofen might help reduce any swelling of the sinus which can sometimes a contributing factor..but yes mainly giving painkillers to help with headache and sore throat.

I think I'll alternate today and hopefully get the best of both

They do a kids olbas oil. A few drops on the edge of the sheet or under the pillow will help.
