AIBU?

Would it be offensive & rude to ask a family member to stop sending me pics of their dc?

I just want to check if I'm being rude here. I want to ask (nicely) a family member not to send me pics of their kids. I'm not interested in a 100 pics of what Johnny ate for breakfast, Johnny getting the bus, Johnny eating his ice cream, Johnny at soft play, Johnny having his afternoon nap etc. You get the idea. I told a friend I want to stop the pics and she said there's nothing I can say that won't cause offence. What d'you think? Aibu? How can I handle this better?

@FabulousFlowerpots - what is your relationship with the person sending the pics?

And what do you most resent about getting them?

The sort of person who does this will be offended because it's inconceivable to them that you wouldn't be desperate for an update.

I have a relative who does this (are we related lol). It feels like competitive "my life is better than yours"-ing. I get all sorts of shite like weird angles of her advent calendar.
IDK how to deal with it without causing offence but YANBU to want it to stop.

It depends how much you care about the upset it would cause. I would just mute the conversation and carry on with my life. If it's something that could spiral then only you know how bad the fall out would be.

I'm part of a much wider WA group with someone who sends random videos and memes almost hourly. I have muted it and remained at peace with everyone.

Dh has taken several of the light bulbs out so dc can't leave lights on.
TV is on but no lights in the whole house..
Sorry for being skint!

Some parents can not realise that some people may not adore other’s kids as much as their own parents. Why don’t you send them lots of random pictures like your dog or cat (if you have one) or anything else. Hopefully they will get the message

How are they sending them? Could it be by mistake if it's that often? I have someone send me all their Instagram stories to me directly and I always wonder if it's intentional or not. I just mute them and reply with a like periodically to show I'm not interested.

Every time you get a photo take a picture of whatever it is you're doing and send it back with a 'looks great, here's what I'm doing' obviously send really boring pics 🤣

I see no one's saying tell them. I bet other people would be annoyed with me if I spammed them with pics of every bit of my motorbike that I'm restoring.

I'd actually be tempted to do that.

They may get the hint without you having to upset them and have the awkward conversation.

What?! Are people actually doing this now? Mental.

Yes people are... including me right at this moment.

How often do they message? If it’s genuinely more than one pic a day I don’t think you’re rude to ask them to stop, but it probably will offend them. Is it a close family member?

Spam them 100s of pictures of your cats, or neighbours cats.

Mute them on WhatsApp and every now and then send a message saying "aww cute".

It's not worth the drama of asking them to stop

I was going to suggest this.

Yes, they'd be upset, and hurt and think you were nasty.
If you want to be that foul to someone, fill your boots.
Or, you could do as everyone has suggested. Just delete the pics as soon as they arrive etc.

Just mute the WhatsApp and then only look and reply once a month or so, and make sure that photos don't automatically save

I was going to say spam them with something in return but I'm quite petty!

Of course they would be annoyed… but they wouldn’t let you know.

Just mute the chat and change the WA settings so your phone doesn't autosave the pics on the phone and deletes on the app after X days (saves valuable storage!).

Maybe that's exactly what you should do. A bit PA but might make your point!!
