MIL - Who is being unreasonable?

(Just to say this is not a usual MIL thread. Although my MIL is a PITA in a myriad of ways, this is fairly lighthearted although I actually feel kind of sorry for her).

So. MIL (let’s call her June) goes to two bridge clubs, Monday night and Tuesday night. On a Monday night, she gets a lift from her friend who we will call Graham. Graham is, apparently, always moaning about something and I think they have nice little quarrels in the car but, of course, June being June obviously thinks nothing of it.

Anyway.

Yesterday afternoon, Graham rang June and said to her terribly sorry but (someone - friend of Graham ) had tested positive for the old ‘rona, he was isolating and unfortunately wouldn’t be able to drive her to bridge

BIL was at June’s and, feeling that June shouldn’t miss out, offered to drive her.

Well - and I think you can all see where this is going - who do you suppose was there already when June arrive?

It was, of course, that treacherous bastard Graham.

Cue a very awkward evening where June and Graham were pointedly ignoring each other.

Now, my DMIL is not one to be snubbed. Oh no. When she got home she was RAGING. She did, perhaps because of the late hour, decide to sleep on her rage.

The next day - today - she got to work. She rang EVERY SINGLE person in the bridge club individually to inform them of what a two faced lying shitbag Graham was.

After that, she then rang every other mutual connection of theirs. The contractor she recommended to him? Got a call. Her hairdresser? Got a call. The gardener they share (and his dad?) Got a call.

So it’s safe to say that Graham might find himself something of a social pariah come next Monday.

Now I know how MN feel about CFs and lifts generally. I don’t think MIL is a CF, I think Graham lives up the road and offered the arrangement (and, besides, it’s about a 3 minute drive but MIL can’t walk more than a few steps unaided so wouldn’t be able to get there (she has a car but has developed a bit of a fear for it, she’s in her 80s.) I suspect the reason Graham lied is because she drives him up the wall and he wanted out of the arrangement. But it was also a pretty stupid lie and obviously quite embarrassing for her - but bad enough for the nuclear reaction? Grin

YABU - June is a classic CF, Graham obviously had had enough of her and is perfectly within his rights to make any excuse he wants to get out of the arrangement and June is being vindictive and OTT

YANBU - Graham was being a dick to an elderly lady, he got caught out of a stupid lie when he should have just been honest if he didn’t want to drive her and June is perfectly within her rights to seek petty revenge

Graham's a nob!!
He should have just been honest. This thread is hilarious I love how she called every one to tell them what a lying pig graham is. Please keep us updated when she finally confronts him 🤣

June is a diamond who gave it to Graham in spades.
The entire bridge club have taken her into their hearts.

@EatYourVegetables

This is the single best thing I ever read on MN. The pettiness! The thoroughness! The shortsightedness! If bridge club next Monday was a soap I’d watch it.

This. Bloody love it. She’s batshit, and he clearly was too scared to tell her to GTF out of his car!

Perhaps her hairdresser tipped him off

Excellent update! Graham has clearly copped on and realised that displeasing June is not worth it.

Is she now going to have ring the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker etc to update them all?

Just realised I did a double lo and behold - I hope that serves to illustrate the drama of the door knock Grin

Love the final update. This thread is the best. I've always wanted to play Bridge. I blame it on to much Agatha Christie as a child. I may have to see if we have any beginners clubs locally. #TeamJune.

So, just for those after an update…

June had decided against getting a taxi to the Monday game in the end, she had asked a couple of other people for a lift and they declined. I think rather than because of her being such an objectionable person/fear of Graham-esque reprisals it was more to do with geography as she isn’t quite on anyone else’s way.

Anyway, lo and behold, she’s sat watching her Monday afternoon quiz shows and lo and behold, who knocks on the door? It’s Graham! Saying he’s here to give her a lift to bridge! Apparently her normal partner wasn’t going to be there so she politely declined, but made a big fuss of how grateful she was of him to be there etc. No mention of last week’s antics.

Not sure what to make of it all to be quite honest. Maybe he feels bad? Brow-beaten? Maybe it was a genuine misunderstanding last week? Who knows. But MIL is happy that she’s “won”, so all is well in her world.

I think the people being contacted by your MIL will think she has proven why Graham didn't want to give her a lift anymore.

As a gardener if any one of my customers rang me up to tell me gossip about one of my other customers I would have fucking loved it.

Unfortunately they are relatively drama free

I think Graham has his eye on another lady at bridge and wants to offer her a lift instead / appear available and June was cramping his style.

Thankfully June has figured out he’s a lying pig before this relationship went any further 😂😂

Thank you @thecombineharvester that was all I could see too. And then posters jumping on like June is a KKK fan purely based on her choice of newspaper 🤷🏻‍♀️ I thought I’d missed something major!!

To stop derailing the thread, and totally regardless of June’s general views which bear no relevance to this instance... Graham was at best very naive for such a stupid and easy to disprove lie. But I’d be interested to know why he did it. There must be SOME reason why he wanted not to take her that week?

June is obviously capable of getting there under her own steam, it seems more the lying that has got her back up, and that would piss me off too tbh. Did she overreact? Probably. Was Graham being a twat? Probably.

Am I stoned on Lemsip Max? Very probably

And I don’t mean to offend anyone. I sell newspapers as part of my job, so see a wide spectrum, and some Times and Guardian purchasers have extremely prejudiced views. I don’t think you can stereotype people based on a paper choice Confused

Totally apologise if I’ve missed OP saying she’s a total racist, obviously! I’ve got a really nasty cold and my comprehension skills are not at their best Blush

I think people took it from the "bingo card of isms" part.

@BeenThruMoreThanALilBit

I would say MIL is like a Daily Mail bingo card of ‘isms, except she stopped her subscription to the Mail several years ago because it got too left wing and now only reads the Express.

From the OP

Daily Mail/Express reader is automatically racist then? She may well be, she might not be. That’s the assumption of prejudice based on a paper preference, I was asking for examples from the OP?

Um, can anyone please quote anything that suggests June is actually racist? Seems to be an assumption based on the fact she read the Daily Mail...

Happy to be corrected, but if not aren’t you pp’s just as judgemental?
