Unless it's particularly important or an emergency?

Another to add to the endless list of things that are very rude that I was not aware of until I read it on MN

@BunchIsBloom

Put ya phone on silent. Simple.

so you have to miss calls that ARE important? How is that a solution?

Yes and the nurseries business hours start at 7 :30. If so worried about it find a nursery that opens later.

Mine started at 7 as it happens...

Somehow they still managed to have basic manners and common sense, which is always reassuring when they are looking after your own children.

Disorganised and incompetent staff would have been a worry and frankly a red flag.

Funnily enough people don’t often revolve their lives around others preferences

Exactly.

which is why you wait for acceptable working hours to make phone calls, you don't suddenly decide it suits you - and you only - to call at 7:30, 5am or 11pm. There are "business hours" for a reason.

The nursery will be the first to moan if you put your phone on silent when they are trying to reach you for a good reason this time.

The nursery is ridiculous. By definition, it's not a number you can easily block as it's one of the "emergency" numbers for most parents WHEN THE KIDS ARE THERE.

You can't expect the parent to block the number when the kids are home, and change it to priority when they kids are at nursery.

Most of us cannot or don't want to switch off their phone, because important calls are also expected.

See how the nursery will like it if you call 1 minute before their closing time and stay on the line for ages!

A lot of parents already do this. Are the nursery allowed to send a shitty email in response?
7:30 just doesn't seem that early and if you're working and/or have young children most people would be up by then.

Funnily enough people don’t often revolve their lives around others preferences. I guess they had a to do list and got on with it- they almost certainly didn’t ring your number on purpose instead of husbands in order to annoy you - I’m sure they didn’t think that deeply about it. It happens, annoying yes, end of the world, not really. Putting your phone on silent is an easy solution

I got a call at 7.20 from a cold caller this morning. I wasn't rude as I know that the people doing this kind of job often have poor working conditions and it's not their choice who and when to call, but I did
point out that it was an unacceptable time. I guess they were calling from another country. We seem to be getting a lot recently despite being signed up with the telephone preference service.

If the nursery open early I don't suppose it occurred to them, especially when most people with small children are up by then. Not nearly as unreasonable as my MIL calling at 5.00 am for a non emergency - she got the time zone back to front and thought it was 7am. Maybe they were ringing that early to guarantee they caught you. It can be just as irritating later in the day if you are busy/working/ out shopping etc.

Ok to get someone out of bed for work, otherwise nope.

I also have to keep phone on for work related issues and anyone texting ringing and emailing can potentially wake me but I sleep like I am dead and so does my children as they are taught to get used to noise. In saying that an email DID wake me at 3.15 one night recently and I replied with Really? Didnt even know who it was....lol. Turned out it was an email from china regrding a product they sent to me and they wanted to know if it had arrived... ...
I would get mighty annoyed if I got a non important call at 7.30 yes.....

Yourcatisnotsorry · 24/02/2021 22:50

Yabu not to have your phone on silent when you are asleep. They are at work and calling when they have a second before all the kids come in. Also most people work 9-5 so won’t be able to answer the phone then. Most people will toddlers will be up at 7.30 so they probably think it’s a convienient time to call. Would you rather they left the kids alone to do the admin jobs in the middle of the day?
Yanbu to question why they call you instead of your husband every time. My nursery does this despite the fact that my OH is the primary carer very annoying.

I think they would phone the house before a mobile phone. When I call parents, I always call landline first.

I know it's annoying but presumably you weren't going to sleep much later.

Tiredwiththeshits · 24/02/2021 19:41

I think they should have called his mobile but maybe absent minded.
I would think your email has politely reminded them of the situation.

To those saying put your phone on silent... what parent/mother does this? If my dd isn’t with me I am contactable at all times in case of emergency.
Sounds as though OP had made decent steps to avoid this with her nursery.... however I’m super intrigued to know what they wanted!!!

When I worked in banking, we were only allowed to contact customers between 9am and 9pm.

Way too early and weird. Unless it was urgent, which it wasn’t.

Report
Scotland32 · 24/02/2021 18:26

Kind of. But if it’s on a mobile you can just ignore. My business partner often calls me early when he is feeding his sheep! If I am awake I answer. If not, I don’t know he has called until I wake up!
