To ask what’s the most toe curling OTT boast/showing off you’ve heard from a parent about their child?

Just seen a FB post from a mum friend boasting about her 9yo daughter doing online dance and gym sessions via zoom and practising for her 11 plus complete with picture of said child sat at her desk and smiling for the camera. Hope the child gets time to chill out now and then! Mum obviously needs us all to believe her daughter is a high achiever! It was so cringy though and I wondered if anyone else out there was biting their lip at stuff like this?!

@midnightstar66

No kid will ask for sushi over pizza, so this means SIL clearly planned this and pulled nephew aside beforehand and told him what to say. Pathetic, really.

Not true, my dc would rather have sushi, authentic curry, unusual tapas, fresh squid etc than pizza - how being they are clever enough (as are the vast majority) to realise that this won't be available at a birthday venue and that the food given will be pre ordered. Maybe that would have been a good response to her boast!

Authentic curry only, though, of course!

@LolaSmiles thank you - it really is. I live in a selective grammar school area so stealth boasts are the total norm here. I have tuned them out!! Funnily enough amongst the local parents I am the only one who even attended grammar school. But that would be a stealth boast and I have no need to make it. I just smile sweetly. After all I have no mortgage, a decent pension, assets, and no irritating husband to deal with ;) #lifeisgood

Back to the topic, could we have implied toe curling boasts, maybe something like me-railing a thread about boasting into 'feel sorry for the gifted ones, why is everyone prejudiced against gifted people'

That sounds like a real achievement for your DC

I can't tell if the ignorance is genuine or not but "highly able" is not the same as being diagnosed with the Sen giftedness

It's not ignorance , we just don't care about your point and you're boring us to tears with it as it's completely irrelevant. HTH.

@Spied

An acquaintance of mine who was forever trying to make out her son was superior to my son started gushing about her son winning the 'Resilience' award one year at school.
I didn't bother trying to explain, simply smiled and patted myself on the back that my DS hadn't won it.

Mine won a Resilience prize last year in their least favourite subject. I am beyond proud. Child and I laughed all night long about how the other kids clearly couldnt have tried (think the comedies with "step forward" and all the recruits apart from 1 step back). But actually the reason I am proud is that mine has really bad learning needs but is able to speak up and out in class. Their resilience prize doesnt mean anything to them but means a lot to me - so hoping their teacher can see the intelligence beyond the learning need.

The only time I shared my son's school report was from nursery:
"initially PFB found aspects of social play difficult such as sharing and taking turns, but now his shared play is much more caring and considerate"

And I did tell a fellow-parent that he had exclaimed over his new vest tops "I think my nursery friends will be very impressed with these!" , purely because I thought it hilarious that I had a fashion-conscious 4-year-old... her face indicated that she took a slightly different view Grin

(and I still maintain that in some cases it is possible to tell when a child is top of the class - where "top of the class" means, as it has always meant and as we all know it means, "highest-achieving academically")

Mhm because you find prejudice so fun hmm
Why do you insist on being so goady and accusing people who challenge your lack of knowledge of being prejudiced?

Even after people have charitably replied and explained why you're wrong on some areas, you just have to come back with more silly digs. Leave it be.
Gancanny
Don't be silly. They don't want a debate. They want to make claims that don't reflect the reality of SEN provision, deny they are talking about highly able when they are and call anyone who disagrees with them prejudiced. I'm sure if they started their own thread it would be like banging your head against a brick wall and by page 4 they will have declared that everyone is prejudiced.

HallieKnight if you want a debate about Gifted and Talented vs SEN then perhaps you should start a separate thread?

Not all of them are. I've met countless students who are utterly mortified by the way their parents brag and conduct themselves.

I've also met some who have confided in me that they feel rubbish and have low self esteem because despite the bragging, the message from home is they are only valued as someone who gives their parents bragging rights. From some on this thread it seems this is quite common.

If you wish to debate the issues you have then start your own thread!

It's not us who are ignorant.

Giftedness isn't SEN. There is no set agreed standard for labelling someone gifted, though IQ of 130+ is typically a measure. Having a high IQ is not a SEN diagnosis.

Provision for able students comes under Highly Able. It is a separate stream to SEN. It is funded differently.

We aren't talking about "highly able students"

Yes you are. Stop trying to label it SEN.

Report
LolaSmiles · 22/11/2020 20:54

No, you are going on about it after trying to conflate highly able students with SEN provision. They are two separate things.

Highly able students are covered through highly able provision.
Students with SEN are covered through SEN provision.
Some students who are highly able may also be on the SEN register (which is not exclusively for those with a diagnosis).
Some students who are highly able do not have SEN

All you're doing is showing your lack of knowledge in this area.

Gifted and talented isn't under SEN.
Some children with SEN may also be highly able.

HallieKnight
Why are you still going on about SEN diagnosis?

Like I said, it doesn't matter how prejudice you are it doesn't change their sen diagnosis

@ChooseYourLameName

I’m guilty of this. My DC is 3 and non verbal. Two days ago he said ‘I want coke, not clear stuff!’ He’s never said anything other than occasional babbles.

I bragged all over Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! And now mumsnet it seems Blush

Love this! I'm with your DC!

And that must have been fab to hear. xx

@Gancanny

High Ability isn't a SEN, separate provision is made for high ability pupils.

Its sad that in 2020 people would want to take away the scarce provision for pupils at a disadvantage due to SEN by claiming its unfair on the brighter children.

I'm
Not referring to high ability pupils, I an referring to Gifted and Talented where their level is way beyond their peers. These can also be pupils with existing needs such as Autism.
