AIBU?

To think you don't need full make up to get off a plane?

Flew overnight and there was a massive queue for the loos onboard once they turned the cabin lights on and served breakfast. People waiting to go to the loo or have a wash/brush teeth. One woman spent no less than 25 minutes in there putting on a full face of make up, knowing full well there were half a dozen people behind waiting to go in. Surely all you want after a 14 hour flight is to freshen up since you'll be having a shower asap anyway and washing it off? Aibu to think it was selfish?

@GrapefruitGin there were other toilets on board but each one had a queue outside it. Given that I was next in line for the one the make up queen was using, I thought I'd get in that one quicker than waiting behind several people at the other loo.

How do you know that’s all she was doing in there? Genuine question. Maybe the first eight minutes were spent trying to get a constipated poo out. Just because she came out in makeup doesn’t mean she did nothing else. However, if that really is all she did then she’s a selfish bugger.

Well I did only hear the loo flush once which was quite early on in proceedings. Followed by tap running for quite a while so assume she had a wash as well as doing her make up. I still think it's a piss take to hog the bathroom for so long when she knew there were queues all over the plane.

I wonder if she was the same woman I was behind at Heathrow security the other day. One of my trays got diverted, only because I had a clear bag in it containing a roll on deodorant, a small (sample size) tube of toothpaste and a travel toothbrush which needed to be checked. The woman I was stuck behind had, I kid you not, about 6 cosmetic bags full of various liquids and creams in her hand luggage. Security person took them all out and emptied them one item at a time. All the time I was just waiting for my little tube of toothpaste and deodorant to get checked. 😡

This always confuses me! (Same with celebrities travelling in full makeup or working out in full makeup Grin)

Definitely selfish to hog the bathroom- she could have done her makeup in her seat!

On a long flight at most I will wear concealer/mascara/lipgloss to the airport/flight then remove it and do a quick face wash, moisturise and teeth brush before landing. 5 mins or less in bathroom and never at a busy time!

I agree. Doing make up isn't an essential function. Going to the toilet is. It isn't rocket science. She was being very selfish and inconsiderate.

Really selfish.

No excuse

If you really need to spend ages applying make up, etc then do it between disembarking the plane and leaving the arrivals hall. There are far more toilets available in the building. It is very selfish to take up all that time in the plane where access is so restricted.

about 6 cosmetic bags full of various liquids and creams in her hand luggage

All the UK and abroad airports we have used this year have instead on only one clear bag of liquids per person. They have made people remove and leave behind any additional ones. The only exception I fund was liquid based medication which could be in addition to the other.

She sounds a little high maintenance.

I noticed this as well, the last time I flew long haul. Some people were not only cleaning their teeth, washing, etc, but changing out of their PJs (well loose joggers, etc).
I was a bit surprised by all the teeth cleaning and washing, to be honest, as the toilets on the flight were so small, it was bad enough actually trying to use the toilet as a toilet.
Far better to freshen up, in baggage re-claim, where there is often a bit of a wait.
(Yes, I know some people dont carry hold luggage, but this was long haul, so more likely to have 2 suitcases, anyway)

Agree.
Don't like plane loos at all and would definitely wait for the washrooms after security on landing if wanting to put make up on.
V inconsiderate.

If you’ve been on a plane for 11+ hours it’s perfectly normal to want to brush your teeth and put some fresh clothes on, especially if you’re landing somewhere hot. Do you expect women to start getting undressed in their seats?

I never have to be concerned about queuing for the loos, I have my own. Emirates First class all the way

She's BVVVU for doing makeup in the plane loo, that place is absolutely filthy. So nasty. Makes me gag just thinking about it.

Sunflower20 · 18/11/2019 00:16

How do people even do that!? It's a tiny space. Does she put her stuff beside the sink? Where there's probably loads of shit and piss particles? Does she touch her face after touching the germ infested door handle and taps? It stinks in there too and there's piss on the floor. People probably change their tampons than touch the taps. Wtf was she thinking of.

Nope.

It's a good job I wasn't on that plane. I would have probably said something very unpleasant to that entitled selfish cow.

Very rude and selfish, especially as there were queues. I always travel economy and at busy times there aren't many toilets compared with the number of people wanting to use them.

If you want to put makeup on (or change your outfit) then do it in the toilets when you land. There are always plenty before you get to the arrivals Hall, and most people travelling long haul have a bit of time to kill while they wait for luggage to appear on the carousel.

Many years ago was in a plane loo for so long the cabin crew started knocking on the door to see if I was OK. I had recently started wearing contact lenses that were uncomfortable, and I couldn't get out.

"Do you expect women to start getting undressed in their seats?"

Unless you are the Queen, being greeted by officials with thousands of cameras, etc, travelling in first class, (and with probably larger sized toilets), then the ordinary Joe Public would have quite a job to change in the toilets, which are very small.

The mixed sex toilets usually have 'wet' on the floor, and are very cramped, and unfair to the people waiting behind you. Just as it is your turn, the seat lights go on for descent.

So, in my view, it would be better to change and put on make-up, once off the flight, and in baggage reclaim, where there are usually toilets.
I agree that cleaning one's teeth is acceptable after a long flight.

The OP described someone spending 20 minutes in the toilet with a queue outside, and this omits those who see the queue and wait in their seats until the toilets are free.
So a bit unfair to other passengers.
