AIBU?

To think my family are extremely thick and full of bullshit?!

(Extended family).

A few retailers have released some of their Christmas collections online recently and I screenshot it and added it to my Facebook story with a caption of "Inject it into my veins 😍"

I posted that at around 8.30 last night. This morning I got a text from my Nan saying can she call, she's worried.

According to her sister, I had posted on an anonymous help forum about drug addiction and that I was feeling the urge to 'inject into my veins' ShockConfused

She then went on to say that I wouldn't know she'd seen it since I thought it was a private Facebook group but actually it was public.

All a load of bollocks. Firstly I have a very mundane existence. Not ever taken so much as a puff from a cigarette. Secondly, similar has happened throughout my life since having FB from 5 years ago but nothing to this scale, at all.

For example, my Nan's sister knew I was pregnant before I told anyone. She guessed because she said to my Nan she'd noticed a distinctive increase in 'baby themed' shares on Facebook. She was actually right, I was pregnant! She told my Nan and Mum she was sure I was pregnant. I wasn't saying yet due to a lot of loss previously.

Anyway, this evening I deleted her from my FB.
I saw 15 minutes later a status post from one of her daughters saying "If you need help there's no point in hiding! Sort yourself out love and come clean! My mum ain't done anything but try to help"

I don't know what to do. I feel so extremely angry but also quite amused that it's gone this far. It's all so strange and ridiculous.

AIBU to say their bloody bonkers and liars after some drama?

How do I go from here? Sad This aunt of mine
Has a big presence within that side of the family and can stir up some proper shit if she feels like it. Luckily enough they live in East London and I'm away. Still south east but not near there.

I'm a boring mum of 1 with a good job, husband and peaceful life. I've never, ever, taken drugs in my life ffs. Now this?!

I feel like I've been tarnished. My Nan is furious with her sister and is screaming she has no right. My Nan is a very big presence also with a lot of 'respect' and genuinely adored by everyone for her selflessness and warmth, and
ability to stay out of drama

Announce you are off to rehab and ghost them all for 6 months.
Ah the peace!

Honest, get rid of SM.
I guarantee the drama will vanish.

They must be thick with nothing much going on in their lives to make drama out of that.
I am 51 and if dd age 25 posted similar i would just think "oh dear here we go with the massive wish lists in September for christmas" Grin and hope she wouldn't buy herself the lot soon!

Odd phrase, one I've not heard of before but if I read it on a Facebook page I might raise my eyebrows and move on.

Families do overreact. I remember in conversation about Ex-Mil I said ”oh she needs telling” meaning she interferes too much in things that are none of her business and thought no more about it.

I then had panicked phone calls from ex’s sister, husband, uncle tom cobley and all, worried that I was in fact going to tell her a few home truths. It was very, very amusing.

It also showed how little they actually knew me. Hmm

You all sound like a bunch of drama llamas.

  1. reactivate Facebook
  2. post loads of double meaning messages
  3. grab popcorn and enjoy watching the situation

Just post under the original “hahaha, you know when people say they could inhale chocolate cake they don’t mean it literally? P. s the word ‘literally’ can be looked up in any good dictionary”.

I've heard of the phrase. It IS an overreaction, but it is also possible not to share every small detail of your life on FB.

Saw a good quote about socia media recently: "Never has a generation so dilligently recorded themselves accomplishing so little".

Obviously, they are being hilariously bonkers. They also sound a bit sheltered from modern life, to be honest!

However, I think you're being a bit silly to be reacting so badly towards this. It's a silly, random accusation that really deserves very little more than amusement. To think that you've been 'tarnished' in some way is a little overdramatic. And a bit stigmatising towards drug users too, really.

You're all drama llamas.

You sound like my SIL who posted loads of pregnancy stuff, liked and commented on loads of pages and then did a massive pregnancy announcement to be told by several friends & family that they already knew.

Is posting about something you'd like to buy 'sharing every small detail of your life'?

I wouldn't worry too much OP, they're drama llamas and it sounds as though your Nan has seen through her lies anyway. I'd reply to your Aunt and let her know the situation, make light of it if you like. Just don't take it too seriously and hopefully they'll drop it.

I think you were right to delete her, sounds like she doesn't really understand social media. This means she can't do it again!

I would use this exact wording when talking about Pumpkin Spice Lattes🤷🏼‍♀️😂
I've a feeling it's an age thing along with people wanting to stir the pot! Don't let it annoy you, ignore & move on!

My god this Aunt does sound like a right shit-stirrer. I think I would private message this daughter who posted the message asking if that was meant to be directed to you - keep it very friendly. Continue by saying her mom had obviously misunderstood your original post so there is really nothing to worry about. Keep it light and easy, make a joke about the misunderstanding and move on. That way she will hopefully calm down and not continue to stir things. They are all nutters and sound like a right bunch of losers, but if you want to kill the drama remain friendly, send one message and then move on. Keep the Aunt blocked, she'll get over it eventually.

On the other hand, my sister constantly posts suicide/self harm related posts because she's depressed and suicidal and is crying out for help (she is getting help it's just a long process) so maybe you should just explain to everyone properly rather than cutting people off.

They're just genuinely worried and that's a nice thing.

YANBU, and im inclined to agree that inject into my veins is clearly hyperbole (im nearly 40 and understand) so your family are just thick as you say, especially given you posted with a product. But cue mn posters coming on to tell you YABU for being on fb and totally missing the point. i dont get the fb snobbery on here, like mn is some sort of superior use of internet over fb!

Oh FFS it's a quote from The Simpsons when Barney wins some alcohol. Some people are thick as fuck when it comes to hyperbole and sarcasm these days.

I agree, I think this relative sounds like a drama addict. Maybe she should find a 12 step programme.

Are they missing Jeremy Kyle?

I think you should go overboard, post loads of pictures of Christmas stuff with comments like, “snort Through a £20 note” or “pass the rizlas” etc until they explode.

Thick people.

Except OP’s family have MADE it real life by telling everyone OP is an intravenous drug user/addict! Prejudiced or not, there IS a social stigma around drug use - and it’s illegal. I’d be furious if people were spreading such lies about me, especially as it could cost me my job.

YANBU, OP. I can’t see how you’re possibly at fault.
