To make DD correct all the spelling/grammar errors in her online blog???

DD is 10 and has just started an online blog. Having read it there are so many spelling errors and grammatical errors its making me cringe.

Am I being unreasonable to make her change it???

You know - I really can't be bothered to waste my energy. My point was that they get enough red pen at school and a blog is like a diary surely?

Anyway.
Carry on....

I was informed by a teacher friend that for many years now, most teachers have not routinely corrected spelling errors particularly if they teach history for example and the mispelt word is nothing history related.

So if a child is unable to spell the word "necessary" correctly, the chances are that the only way they will realise is if they use it in a piece of work submitted for marking/scrutiny by their English teacher. This drastically reduces their chances of improving their spelling ability whilst going through many years of education.
Same rules apply for poor puntuation apparently.

I'm just relating what I have been told is policy these days.

Teachers themselves will eventually be the product of this system and the downward spiral in spelling standards becomes self-perpetuating.

You know, I really can't even be bothered to respond.

curious cat's experiences seem to confirm what I've been told.

Ah yes but at least you're using "I" now instead of textspeak "i".

I'm not running out on this now, I have to go pick my children up.

I (ex teacher) agree with Popsy.

Point out that there are loads of SPG errors if you must, but don't insist she corrects. It's supposed to be fun, not homework!

at fedup!!! Out of order to have a go like that! And for what it is worth that is NOT my experience of teachers and marking. Infact at secondary lvel children lose marks for poor SPG.

Report

he he he he NQC I was waiting for somebody to correct my original post as there is BOUND to be some errors in it

I think part of my problem with it is I KNOW DD can actually spell as it is one of her abilities. She can probably spell better than me lol.

I am so glad that the parents that I deal with are generally supportive and reasonable...

SOrry Wangle99, for taking over your thread with this ridiculous argument. I will leave now.

Right... have decided... will tell DD there are some errors in it and leave it up to her to correct it.

And No I wouldn't read her diary (if she has one) as it would be private. She wants people to read her blog so no personal private thoughts going in there just basically what we have been doing.

I wouldn't make her change it. I would ask if she needs any help with her spelling, show her useful tools like spellcheck and online dictionaries, give her a decent dictionary and thesaurus etc but as others have said it's like a diary not a school project.

Fedup, I'm not sure why you are attacking popsycal, just because she wouldn't correct spellings in this situation doesn't mean she wouldn't correct the spelling and punctuation in the work of her pupils.

I only corrected the spelling and punctuation of people who came out strongly in favour of correcting people! I don't actually care about those sorts of errors on here, and I'm sure I make loads!

Is "puntuation" something to do with rowing? We don't have it in Canada.

fedupw thanks for confirming the teacher's story. really bad news for kids though.

I thought people learned good spelling and punctuation from reading good spelling etc? Certainly I was dreadful at spelling at primary school, and only got the knack at secondary, because of how much I read? (I do still struggle with ie/ei problems, and double consonants.)

Hulababy · 27/07/2007 21:56

curiouscat - I really don't think that is the norm in the majorty of schools. Certainly not my experience and I have been in a few schools and know lots of teachers.

Yes you are being unreasonable. This her space leave her alone about it. Leave the correcting to school work. Supervise her carefully but unless there is something actually offensive don't make her change it.
Just my opinion.

I was typing very quickly, NQC.

I would still point out errors, obviously, not mine, as I can't put two words together

I think it is the correct thing to do. (even within my very crap limits)
