AIBU?

That it really annoys me when OP is asked a question and doesn't answer it?

For example, I still don't know what a gog botherer is, I have googled it, Google thinks I meant god botherer. I neeeeeeed to know! People have asked numerous times and OP just ignores it. I've seen similar on other threads, where people are asking for charity or further info and OP still posts but ignores these requests. Please tell me it's not me BU and that it's really annoying?!

oops it's taken me a few days to come back to this!!Blush

😂 As soon I wrote it I thought oh no hope OP doesn't think it's a dig. I mean the ones where people are offering advice and they just disappear.

It is really annoying when people don’t answer direct questions that would give valuable context! I’ve heard the term gog botherer though, mostly in Scotland so maybe that’s where the OP is from. It’s just a slightly childish term for a person who wears glasses.

Assuming it’s not about harassing people from Llandudno or similar, because the only other context I’ve heard ‘gog’ used—in reference to people from north Wales (e.g. he has a gog accent).

Goggles is an old fashioned expression for glasses, usually used as a nickname for the wearer rather than the glasses themselves. Talking early 20thC here, although it might well have remained common for longer in some areas.

Maybe we should bring back 'gig lamps' as glasses slang!

@MrHaroldFry no no, OP really does mean Gog botherer... it refers to another thread where for a while I thought it was a typo too!

Noyourenot · 03/03/2019 09:05

She did answer. Said family members said it. The OP of that thread has poor eyesight, doesn’t want to wear glasses, so had lots of typos. It was hard to read.

Glasses are sometimes referred to as gogs. No idea why and know nobody that calls them that short for goggles maybe? I don’t get all the confusion about that op it was clear even if someone didn’t know what it meant that she was using it to refer to her ds and dh as glasses wearers.

I have never heard Gog Botherer.
If you mean God-Botherer, this is a derogatory phrase regarding a deeply religious person.
I grew up in Ireland and some teenage boys would call this after nuns from the local Covent school.

Alternatively did you mean Dog Botherer? This is a version of sheep shagger again, not said in kindness.

@Parly oh yes I do find it rather frustrating that it doesn't take you to your last read comment like it does on other sites

@Karwomannghia I think the point was people wanted to know how it meant that. It's like me saying potato watcher means a MN user. Without any explanation it just makes no sense. (btw I made that as a random example I don't use that lol)

@Fluffyears. Oh yes I agree with that too. Or when people comment based only on the OP despite several other messages from the OPer which usually answer whatever they are now Asking

I do think it's annoying we can't reply directly to a poster with quoted text displayed if that makes sense.

You can @ the person but it's not as easy to keep track and tabs of where you've been and which people / posts are being given further replies.

So can't really answer your question but think it's maybe easy to just miss what people post unless you're watching and glued like a bitch to who is saying what. Confused

I read that where she broke her dh’s glasses. Context clearly showed it meant glasses wearers.

WatcherintheRye · 02/03/2019 23:50

The op in that case did address the question at some point in the thread. I remember reading that when she first got to know her dh he referred to himself as a gog botherer (wearer of glasses).

I'm in Wales and never heard of a gog. That lady who said gog botherer has made that saying up to refer to someone who wears glasses. When she said she never went back she was referring to the opticians. She said something about needing glasses herself, but she hadn't gone back.

LMAO! I am here because I googled ‘gog botherer’

I clicked the no no google, I did mean gog not god... button.

Ah well, guess she meant goggle wearer...

It annoys me when people answer an OPs question or give an opinion and the OP never comes back, not even to say thanks. Sometimes the thread is a few pages of comments, I feel like people have spent their time answering it's just courtesy to not disappear into thin air.

I think she was trying to be funny mocking her glasses wearing family and labelling them as gog followers.

Hushabyelullaby · 01/03/2019 18:26

specific to this part of the world, but it could be Gog botherer. People from North Wales are sometimes referred to as Gogs (it could come from the Welsh for North which is Gogledd?). I doubt there'd be a phrase for annoying/bothering a certain group of people, but who am I to say, there may well be.

I've never heard glasses referred to as gogs or goggles - unless someone is drunk and then you could say they are wearing beer goggles.

It was probably deliberate to get people talking, recommend for classics and bang on forever more like that snapped and farted bollocks.

Gog to me is short form for gollywog so I was already irritated just from reading the thread title of that one ;)

needthisthread · 01/03/2019 18:23

I still think it's meant to be GOD bothered. OP said she was but never went back, I assumed she meant to church. Can't quite match that up with the glasses shite though
