DO NOT FLY NORWEGIAN AIRLINES!

arnotm · 27/02/2019 14:40

I flew with Norwegian Airlines a few months ago, a night from New York to London. During the day of the flight I received a text message saying my flight was delayed 4 hours from 11pm till 3am, and to ring to reschedule. I rang within minutes, and was told the only available flight would be 3am 24 hours later. Laughable. Then at the airport there we were delayed AGAIN so we didn't set off until gone 5am. I understand that delays and cancellations are common with Norwegian airlines. I followed up with them months ago but did not even receive a response from them. Yes they may be cheaper than other airlines, but you're likely to regret that choice.

I would be interested to read more about this 'commercial shifting policy'

Any further information?

Yes Maddiemookins this ‘commercial shifting policy’ sounds like what happened with my friends’ flights. Both out of Gatwick to JKF (NA kept threatening to cancel flight so very stressful) and actually cancelled on the way back. It’s something that they are known for despite all the positivity on this thread for the European flights, don’t do the JFK route!

Worst thing is, they don’t have a single person in the UK you can speak to about an ongoing complaint.

So when you have a complaint with British Airways you pop down to their HQ to talk it through in person do you?

Why on earth does it make any difference where the person on the other end of the phone is located?

Technically, NA wet leased the HiFly.

There's more info here (or just google): simpleflying.com/norwegian-leases-hifly-a380/

I too am a curious as to why OP is refusing to respond as to the actual reason it was delayed. Either she knows and won't say; or for some peculiar reason managed not to hear why during the entire delay period.

No it was reported fairly widely before Christmas when we were booking flights. Not inferring from the op but from what was printed online.

Because of one bad experience let's watch them go bust ..... really ?? Hmm

YANBU, they use a commercial shifting policy on their JFK route I believe (we suffered at their hands coming back from NYC 3 years ago, 26.5 hour delay). Our flight number (the one that was bringing people out that we would have then gone home on) took off from Gatwick 7 hours late. I knew that as I’d checked so expected a delay homeward bound. But no, they then sent ‘our plane’ once it arrived at JFK to Boston to take home people from there instead (commercial shifting).
15 months it took to even get our accommodation costs back for the hotel we had to sort out in NYC. Worst thing is, they don’t have a single person in the UK you can speak to about an ongoing complaint. I would never travel with them again and having worked in the travel industry for 30 years I usually roll my eyes to an extent when people say that and think to myself ‘you will if the price is right’. But I honestly won’t consider any flight with them. They blatantly lied to us and said the flight was delayed homeward bound due to bad weather in JFK, utter tosh I was there and it was lovely, the plane was elsewhere!!

They are banned from the EU, have been for many years.

I once flew to India from Heathrow airport and I didn’t land in Delhi until 5 days later. I got stuck in Uzbekistan because of an unscheduled detour. I had to use the same airline coming back but I haven’t flown with Ariana Afghan Airways since.

I’d also read they have a very small fleet so more at risk from delays/ cancellations

Someone touched on this earlier. Bigger airlines are not delay/cancellation free. Bigger airlines have more routes. They don't have spare aircraft sitting about just in case any more than any other airline does. Incidentally, NA fleet is over 150 aircraft.

I can cope with a 3 or 4 hour delay but the above did worry me.

Technical/weather/crew issues cause delays. No more to one airline than another though.

We avoided them.

They were 6 days away from collapse just before Christmas and are now cutting costs.

Are you on their mailing list? I get a mail every time their flights are on offer, which is pretty regularly. I’ve got some good deals that way.

I have just booked flights with Norwegian for week after next. Glad this thread was posted as it reminded me to do it.

Funny that - I was just on their website checking out flights for the summer, also inspired by this thread.

On the afternoon of the flight, I received another text message saying flight was delayed from 23.00pm till 3am. I had already made plans to go to the airport of course. And then at the airport there was further delay of a couple hours.

Quotes from two of your posts. It isn't clear whether you got on the flight at 3am (which was delayed 2 hours) in the same night as the flight you were booked on or whether you had to wait until the next night.

Write to the Civil Aviation Authority as someone else has suggested but make sure you explain very clearly what actually happened or they won't understand what the problem was and won't be able to help.

What was the reason for the delay?
Did the company follow correct procedures following the delay?

Did you, if it was their fault, use the online compensation claim - there are a few but the nest one is generally the one on the Martin Lewis site? Did that not work?

Unfortunately all airlines have delays. Some are due to an issue which the airline is responsible for and some are out of their hands. Whilst they are frustrating and at the time, really hard, there is only so much airlines can do.

I'm afraid one the the risks with a budget airline is that their no frills line does also extend to when there are delays. There still isn't any on plane entertainment, additional food and drinks, etc. They can't just go and get some.

If the fault is due to the airline - then claim in the correct manner. We've done it once - RyanAir, short haul - and the money (compensation; we did fly so no refund on ticket though compensation was greater than our ticket price as it was) was in our account within a fortnight. My sister has also claimed once - Thomas Cook, long haul - again very quick response and compensation money (again more than cost of the actual flights) in accounts asap.

I was just reading about that. I like how people are angry that they haven't been told when their flight will leave. Because Thai Airways have special powers to sort out the conflict between Pakistan and India and open up the flight corridor again...

Thanks needthisthread, I like you too. Are you a single mum by any chance?

Are you always this highly strung that you insult people who don’t agree with you?
Yabu, you don’t like them, don’t use them again simple.
Not really a massive thing to put people off really though Confused
