To think DD can change the cat litter tray?

DD is 19! And lives here rent free (doing a retake year in sixth form).

When she is at home and I'm doing something and so is her dad, we ask her to change the cat litter tray. We are always greeted with "what? No! If it was my cat I'd allow it outside..." "if it was my cat, I'd do this this this and this" etc etc. and that it isn't her cat to look after

I don't know why she can't just help out. She does help in other areas, but I mean with the cat.

YANBU - however did you make her clean up other people's mess or after the pets when she was growing up? If not then don't expect her suddenly to change just because she is an adult. The only way her behaviour would change is if she moved out for a few years and had to share with non-related adults who weren't her friends.

I have a cat so I do everything for it, DH does nothing but I think that's fair because it is my cat. The only time he's scooped the tray was for three days after my cs. When I went away and he stayed at home, I had the cat boarded so he didn't have to look after it.

If dd does her share of all the other chores, maybe let this one go. If you're doing a chore and the cats litter needs changing, swap with her, you do that and she does what you were doing.

Hmmmm any other chore I'd say yes she should do it, but if it's not her cat just get her to do something else, you chose to have a cat and solely keep it inside, she has no choice over that. If she'd asked for the cat different story.

Um... she lives rent free. Yes, she jolly well ought to be dealing with the litter tray, if you ask her to. If she doesn't want to pitch in and do the rubbish jobs (which jobs does she do?), perhaps she ought to move on?

Fucking fireworks. 3 cats. One shit in the bath and the other the bathroom floor... it happens never any other accidents apart from firework season and they are petrified. My 10 and 7 year old daughter feed the cats. Clean up after them. And cleaned the shit. Put all the clothes in the bin. Disinfected the bath and then 're cleaned it after so when I bathed the baby she didn't get cleaning products on her. This was this morning before school. 10 and 7. Your 19 year old daughter ( I have no idea about teenagers apart from being one so no judgement) is lazzzzzy. At 9 I wheeled my granny around so she could do her shopping. Some teenagers especially today have this idea we owe them for existing. I have worked hard to install in my girls that the house work fairy is made up bull shit. Now when they are teenagers they may be like this but i doubt it because they were taught early on.

So she pays no rent and is quibbling because if she had a cat she would let it outside to crap on her neighbours lawns and not provide it with a litter tray.

She sounds delightful, surely it's a household chore and you pitch in with them regardless of whether you wanted the cat or not?

DS looks after his own cat here as he wanted a cat. He is 10 and will scoop poop and make sure her water is clean. DH does full litter changes and feeding as we have a cat each, but DS is more than capable of scooping poop.
