AIBU?

to buy a 7-seat car for 2dc?

I don’t need a 7-seater (2dc) but I’m tempted for a number of reasons. It would be convenient to be able to carry 4 dc on play dates, and days out; the boot space with the back seats down is considerable. The flexibility of a hatchback/ almost-van would be welcome at times. I like the slightly elevated driving position that I can’t afford otherwise.

But in terms of safety, I’m wondering if 2dc are safer sitting in the back of a normal 5-seater car, ie does the narrow middle seat mean that there is a more generous crumple zone on the side walls of the car? Or are 7-seaters wider than 5-seaters on average?

Buying used, not new, so there’s a difference of at least two years between five seaters and seven in my price range.

There’s a higher chance of getting a petrol engine in a five seater; all the seven seaters in my price range are diesels and most of my driving is tootling around schools and shops.

At the moment I can just about squeeze a small booster cushion between two high back booster seats in the back of my current car. But the seats are pushed out to the side and the seat belts aren’t easily accessible so not very safe. One in the front means I can just about carry four. (I’ve only done this once in an emergency)

If I could take 4 dc comfortably, I’d be able to have double play dates, take friends out on our annual zoo membership, or have multiple play dates. At the moment I can only have more than one extra child over if I arrange to have one dropped over by another parent, or one of my ds are going out on a play date.

But at most, I’m unlikely to have 4 dc in the car more than once a week, maybe twice. In the meantime my 2 ds’s will be using the car and I think my biggest concern is whether their safety is compromised for the occasional convenience of carrying more people.

So AIBU to get a 7seater?

Aibu to consider a 7 seater?

Peugeot do petrol 5008’s that are v economical. I know Peugeot don’t have the best reputation for reliability, but I’ve run several over the years and they were all great. The only car that let me down badly was a Mazda - that I had from new!

I don't get travel sick or anxious in their car like I have in normal ones. I good to know. Dd has mild motion sickness so it would be useful if it helped.

I have a new diesel and the difference between a new diesel and a pre-2014 are massive. Pre-2014 are the ones that are likely to get hit with emission taxes as they are the dirty diesels so you do need to consider that. that’s good to know. My budget doesn’t stretch to 2014 though Sad

Diesel particulate filters (DPF) tend to need a long motorway run (15 to 20 minutes at a decent speed) in order to get the engine hot and clear the filter. Without this, you can end up with a clogged or blocked DPF. And replacing those can be £0000s depending on the model. thanks for explaining this so clearly. All the sales people I’ve spoken to so far have been a bit foggy in their answers depending on what they’ve been trying to sell me. I drive for 30 minutes on the motorway once a week at high speed so that will probably help (the journey back, also on the motorway is often at slower speeds than the school runs!)

Toyota have petrol Versos, there are petrol Volkswagen Sharans/Tourans, petrol Zafiras from Vauxhall. It’s only when you get to the bigger 4x4s that you find almost 98% of those used cars are diesel useful info, thank you! I think I’ll concentrate on finding a model or models I like and then see if I can pounce on a petrol one if it comes along.

My parents got one even though just me and DB and it came in handy a lot- we were each able to take a friend on holiday, could pick up DGPs, take the back seat out to get all my uni stuff in! Can't comment on safety as never had a problem but I feel much safer in their car because it's higher and smoother, and I don't get travel sick or anxious in their car like I have in normal ones. I can see us getting one when we have DCs regardless of how many we have!

I have a mitsubishi outlander...first seven seater.

i love it...I measured backseats and boot space when I was looking (for generous middle row seat (usually used as back seat) and to make sure boot would fit camping gear.

I think you just need to try them out....like any car, the back/middle row can be generous or cramped....

OP, please ignore the “you’ve given up on life if you have a 7 seater” nonsense, typically goady rubbish, buy the car that fits your needs not someone else’s idea of image

Ok back on topic:

I agree please consider avoiding diesel if you are doing short journeys. Not for environmental/air quality reasons only, more to protect your wallet in future.

We have a 7-seater and don't even have children yet! (DD is on the way though).

It just happened that the car we wanted, in the spec and colour we wanted and in our price range had 7 seats (Nissan X-Trail).

In hindsight, I would have waited it out for a 5 seater though because we have a dog crate in the back of our car and with the seats folded it means that the boot isn't completely flat for them.

I'm sure it will come in handy one day though.

I have a single 14 year and also have the BMW gran tourer. It is great for moving a gaggle of teenagers about, but I also regular move a full size keyboard and a single back seat pops down and it fits nicely.
But I have a new diesel and the difference between a new diesel and a pre-2014 are massive. Pre-2014 are the ones that are likely to get hit with emission taxes as they are the dirty diesels so you do need to consider that.

Relieved that I’m not completely mad so! Grin
Laughing at the idea of giving up on life- I suppose I have giving up the expectation of driving my convertible Porsche through the streets of Monaco with the wind in my hair Grin Love my life though!

So an older diesel over a newer petrol? You'd be mad to do that if you don't have to. This concerns me though.

Mines a BMW 2 series Gran Tourer. It looks like an estate car but has 2 extra seats in the boot. Its really handy for carting extra family members. I also offer lifts more which has proved handy on days out. We always coped with 2 cars but better taking one.

Im planning on having it for several years with dc aged 4 and 7 it gives lots of flexibility for lift sharing. I really love it.

When i got it i was sad to not be getting a nice saloon but i do love it now. Its fun to drive too. Nippy. I am not very arsed about appearances but I feel pleased with it. I happily call it a posh mum-mobile to explain what kind of car it is. So what if others sneer. Its what works with your lifestyle. Sleek sporty cars will be great when the dc are all grown up!!

Whwn I was still with my Ex we had a 6 seater Galaxy and only 2 DC. I bloody loved that car. Prior to that we had estate cars but this was not much longer but much more practical as we could accommodate an extra 2 kids or adults. The best bit was all the seats were individual so it was the end of endless 'he touched me/ he's on my seat/ in my way' that was the previous running commentary on long car journeys Grin

I have a Kia Sorento and love it. 3DC, one Labrador & hundreds of friends I'm always driving about it seems!

The two seats in the boot are full size with good leg room and a 5* safety rating, which not all the 7seaters have.

And it looks good-so no, not a mum given up on chic life, mobile-just looks like a 4x4-which it can be at the flick of a switch meaning extra safety in the winter but not as expensive road tax wise. Also has 7yr warranty so cheap to run.

I don't work for Kia also!😂 Just love my car!

there's nothing that screams "I've given up on life" quite like a 7 seater mum-mobile.

Really Hmm

I don't give a shiny shit what anyone thinks of my car. It fits my needs. Job done.

The great thing about some 7 seaters is that you can take the seats out individually. So you can drive it as a 5 seater with a massive boot. Or a 6 seater with the middle seat out so everyone can get in and out easily.
My 3 DC are now teens, we have a 7 seater, but usually have it with 2 seats in middle row with the middle bit as a good space and one seat in the back row. Everyone can reach the car chargers! Space for luggage! A win-win situation.

I’d get a Toyota verso, so a 5+2 configuration. We had a petrol version, it was a great drive with a big boot but not much bigger than an average car so easy to park etc.

We’ve now got a diesel Sharan, and it is a giant shoebox, functional but not much fun to drive.

3 children and a Grand Scenic. It can be surprisingly entertaining to drive, especially around corners and thanks to the electronic hand brake, is rather fast when traffic lights change to green. Boot is fantastic for furniture and can fit 3 children's bikes in plus luggage.

Yes YABU. there's nothing that screams "I've given up on life" quite like a 7 seater mum-mobile. They're usually shit to drive and even the best designed ones can't quite hide the fact they look like ginormous shoe boxes.

Some people don't really care about image or what other people think. They just want a practical, safe way to get from a to b. Nothing wrong with a 7 seater if that's what you want OP. Just get what you like. I would try and get petrol if you cab though.

we just got one yesterday - a 2011 Volkswagen Routan - and it is amazing!! We were upgrading from a 2001 toyota camry so the difference in space and optons is just magical. It gets pretty good gas mileage and we plan to put one of the back seat sections down to make space for our two large dogs.

The bit I like the idea of is the elevated driving position tbh

Parking one in London would be a bugger though!

One of the things I loved about my 7-seater was that the seats were higher, which made it easier to help the children in and out of their seats and do up seatbelts.

I’ve just traded in my Peugeot 5008 as it was diesel and boy do I miss the space and flexibility. To PPs who said they are rubbish to drive should try this one. Didn’t feel like a van - drove like a normal saloon.

When the new version has been put for a year or two more I’m going back to it as o have DGCs on the way. Smile

We've got a 7 seater Citroen Picasso. Love it. Huge boot space - so always got room for the pram and two spare car seats . Not regretted it at all. Means we can have a huge tent too!

I have a 7 seater Kia Sorento - think "poor man's Audi Q7".

It's ace! Massive boot space, I got three wardrobes and a bed in there along with many other ikea sundries once!
