AIBU?

To ask what IS this 'virus'?

DS has a(nother) virus.

We've been to the GP twice since Saturday, because his temp has been consistently over 39.5, and slow to respond to calpol/Ibuprofen (better response to calpol unusually for him).

I've taken him to the GP because he often gets tonsillitis and becomes very very unwell (have a look at my posting history for 6 months of drama) - but this time there is no sign of anything except a viral sore throat and slightly snotty - literally nothing. He is teething about 5 teeth simultaneously but I know that that wouldn't cause a fever like this.

Apparently lots of kids at the nursery are the same - high fever, fine and bubbly as ever when they've got calpol in them, but as soon as it wears off, they're in a state with super high temps.

WHAT IS IT? AND WILL IT PLEASE FUCK OFF BEFORE I LOSE MY JOB, OR MY MIND?????

On a deadline for a project and my absence has not gone down at all well - but am LP with v little support network here, so it's pretty much not an option to not stay at home with him. Cant take him in with me as I usually would because everyones working flat out towards the deadline and he's a distraction.

Not really an AIBU, just a wail of despair....

Slapped cheek also going round. No symptoms until after infectious period is over, so you have to keep away from people with compromised immune systems if the infection is in your child’s school.

Not seem my Gran with cancer in 4 weeks.Sad

Yes, mw checked me and referred me to gp. None of us think mastitis, I've had it before, and no rash at the mo. Dosing up on ibuprofen, so I can do the bare minimum at home!

Started off soft to the touch then turned dry and sandpapery feeling. Itchy for about 24h.

Minipie Scarlet Fever - my nephew has just had it.

@inappropriateraspberry could you have mastitis? Have you been checked over by a midwife?

This is slightly reassuring! I gave birth 10 days ago and now have a temp and go between shivering and hot. The gp doesn't think it's related to the birth, and hopefully with these reports,' it is 'just' a virus that will clear off in a couple of days! So hard to keep going with a toddler and newborn!

There is a lot going around at the moment.

The main viruses we are seeing (Highlands of Scotland, but pretty typical for anywhere in the UK) are adenovirus, coronavirus and RSV. Both can make you feel like shite but both are self-limiting in most cases. Kids tend to have one virus after another, and often the kids we're testing have two or three at the same time, little snot-bombs that they are.

We're seeing a lot of Group A Strep as well, which is the cause of scarlet fever.

Also whilst the flu season has pretty much finished, we've got a bit of Flu B knocking about.

I've had this since Friday, it's like a cold but not quite, a cold doesn't make me nearly puke in the shower.

DS (1) is the same too. Temp on and off since last Wednesday, snotty, cough, clingy and miserable. I’ve got a sore throat, swollen glands and a weird rash (hence name change, started another thread about it.) GP today not sure what any of it was. Prescribed me antibiotics for the rash just in case!

My DS is exactly the same! Had to come home from nursery yesterday because his temp was 39.2. There's nothing wrong with him except a snotty nose and slightly reduced appetite. I'm going to end up having to keep him off tomorrow if his temperature is still high but there really doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him Confused

Unfortunately not yet Sad Other DS is hot now too!

Still waiting for swab results. Dr thought probably not scarlet fever but not sure so gave us antibs. No fever any more just cough and very tired!

Hope everyone's LOs are feeling better.

Did you get it checked out minipie?

Hope everyone else’s DCs are feeling much better. DS has a horrible high fever today that’s making him very uncomfortable. It’s only coming down to 39.2 with meds. He says he feels ok at that but he looks awful. Poor boy Sad I hope he feels better quickly so he can enjoy half term.

Thanks gin, I think DD1's had a bit of a free pass today because I was worried it was scarlet fever! She's certainly well enough in herself for school. If the nurse says it's not scarlet fever she'll be back tomorrow (and then she'll probably move on to the temp and cough stage and will be off again next week... sigh)

It's awful, but you'll have to imagine as if it was you who had fallen ill, and your boss too. Sometimes shit happens at the worst times. Sad

No idea what it could be, but I hope he gets better soon.

DD2 (10 Months) had this. A temp of over 40’c for FIVE DAYS.
Doctor was useless and didn’t recommend anything. I took last week off work to look after her, and then this weekend I got flu! Am now off work AGAIN this week feeling like I’m dying, while DD is back at nursery.
I said to DH that if anyone else gets sick he’ll have to take off work to look after them. I can’t take more time off for anything!! 😷☹️

ginyogarepeat · 14/03/2018 09:59

He's in school as no fever, is in good form and eating ok. Wouldn't hesitate to keep him off if he had a temperature or was very lethargic, but this week he's not at all.

minipie · 14/03/2018 09:38

Interesting gin I'd convinced myself last night it was scarlet fever but maybe it's not (seeing nurse later to double check)... Not sure whether to keep them off school and nursery, what are you doing? DD1 is at the rash stage but well in herself (prancing round kitchen playing games with a balloon) DD2 is at the snot/cough stage and a bit tetchy...

Report
ginyogarepeat · 14/03/2018 09:24

Sounds exactly the same @minipie . His went sandpapery too, and his back still feels like that almost two weeks on. No fever now, and is well enough in himself except for all the snot and gunk bothering him, and now the cough keeping him awake, which I assume is a post nasal drip from all the mucus! It's just really dragging on - am so hoping it's the last virus of the season!

My little boy seems to have this too!

He's not been right for the past week, usually so energetic and Happy and he's been absolutely zonked out with temperatures.

Got him to the docs Friday who has diagnosed an ear infection an has on antibiotics, he seems to have the temps again and his ear keeps turning dark red an is very snotty :(

One thing after a bloody nother since he started nursery in August.

If it's not every week it's every other week :( just wish he'd get a break an then I catch it an feel like death.

Feel sorry for all our little ones having this

We have had this bug. Temps of 40.6 and meds not shifting it below 38.9. Eye snot, nose snot, a terrible cough and sore throat. Gp said chest infection but i wasn't convinced. She is just getting over it after 1.5 weeks. She's only 1 and it really knocked her for 6.

minipie · 14/03/2018 08:14

Hmm ginyoga now I'm wondering whether DD's is scarlet fever or just "viral rash" like yours... DD has had the rash, then high temps, gunky eyes, a bit of a snotty nose (she never really gets snotty) and lots of coughing. Her tongue looks normal. Did your DS's rash go "sandpapery" feeling?
