To want people in the cafe to stop talking

The people next to me were talking for over half an hour about; their horrific childbirths, the blood, the phlegm when the child was resuscitated, how much they vomited. Now how their toddler is ill with diarrhoea.

God.

It really put me off my food but I was too British to say anything or to move table. I just quickly ate and left.

What would you have done? Do you agree some topics are not appropriate when dining publicly.

I don't like it when people talk so loudly, I can't block them out. I think it's very rude.

MadMags · 20/02/2018 12:08

It didn’t put you off your food enough for you to stop eating though...

shetookshelter · 20/02/2018 12:16

I was brought up with this concept and I thought everyone else was too

Not to the same extent, clearly. I wouldn't be bothered about my child talking about a mouldy apple at the dinner table tbh.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 20/02/2018 12:23

A furry apple would put you off your food?
Jeez I had no idea people were so delicate Hmm

KateAdiesEarrings · 20/02/2018 12:25

I was brought up the same as you OP and I'm teaching DS the same.
In my own house at my dinner table, it's my rules Wink

But I know lots of people weren't brought up that way so you can't impose that value system on them.

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 20/02/2018 12:33

OP

I would have gone over to their table and projectile vomited right over them (think Mr Wafer Thin Mint ala Monty Python.) then said, sorry, your topics of conversation made me feel ill.

Yes, someone saying ' the apple was all furry, then a worm came out and it erupted like pus!' is revolting. Even just saying it's furry conjures up an image of decay which is unpleasant. 'Just saying 'it's furry' evokes the image of worms, and rot and mould and ooze.

Someone else said, 'childbirth is not disgusting'. No it isn't.
But the poo, and the vomit are. And noone wants to hear about phlegm and mucous and vomit while eating.

then stop listening to other people's conversation if you don't like them. Simple answer, basic manners.
